Electric Fan Switch

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION




CAUTION
An electric fan under the hood can start up even when the engine is not running and can injure you. Keep hands, clothing, and tools away from any underhood electric fan.


CAUTION
To help avoid personal injury or damage to the vehicle, a bent, cracked, or damaged fan blade or housing should always be replaced.

Catera

The engine cooling fan switches are located in the left radiator end tank. Both switches have two sets of contacts which, are opened and closed at different temperatures. The switches are used in conjunction with the cooling fan relays and a resister to control the fans at various speeds, depending on the coolant temperature.

  1. Drain the cooling system below the level of the switch being replaced.
  2.  
  3. Remove the radiator outlet hose from the radiator.
  4.  
  5. Detach the electrical connector and the upper cooling fan control switch from the radiator.
  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support the vehicle securely on jackstands.
  8.  
  9. Detach the electrical connector and the lower cooling fan control switch from the radiator.
  10.  
  11. Detach the electrical connector.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the lower cooling fan control switch to the radiator and the electrical connector.
  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Install the upper cooling fan control switch to the radiator and the electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Connect the radiator outlet hose to the radiator, and refill the cooling system.
  8.  

Deville, Deville Concours, and Eldorado
  1. Remove the upper filler panel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner.
  4.  
  5. Remove the left engine torque strut.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the upper radiator hose.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the upper oil cooler line from the radiator.
  10.  
  11. Detach the cooling fan electrical connectors, unbolt the fans, and remove them.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the cooling fans and tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Attach the cooling fan electrical connectors.
  4.  
  5. Connect the upper oil cooler line to the radiator.
  6.  
  7. Reattach the upper radiator hose.
  8.  
  9. Install the left engine torque strut.
  10.  
  11. Install the air cleaner.
  12.  
  13. Install the upper filler panel.
  14.  

Seville
  1. Remove the hood latch bracket.
  2.  
  3. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  4.  
  5. Remove the headlamps.
  6.  
  7. Remove the condenser mounting bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the radiator brackets.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the upper engine oil cooler hose from the radiator.
  12.  
  13. Remove the air cleaner.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the radiator.
  16.  
  17. Tilt the radiator forward.
  18.  
  19. Detach the electrical connectors from the cooling fans.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the generator inlet cooler hose from the radiator.
  22.  
  23. Remove the cooling fan assembly from the radiator.
  24.  
  25. Remove the radiator.
  26.  

To install:

  1. Install the cooling fan assembly to the radiator.
  2.  
  3. Install the radiator to the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Connect the generator inlet cooler line to the radiator.
  6.  
  7. Attach the electrical connectors to the cooling fans.
  8.  
  9. Connect the lower radiator hose to the engine.
  10.  
  11. Install the air cleaner.
  12.  
  13. Connect the upper engine oil cooler hose to the radiator.
  14.  
  15. Install the radiator brackets.
  16.  
  17. Install the condenser mounting bolts, and tighten to 10 ft. lbs. (13 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the hood latch bracket.
  20.  
  21. Install the headlamps.
  22.  
  23. Fill the cooling system.
