REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1967-68 Models-Standard Cluster

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the clock shaft knob, if so equipped.
  2.  
  3. Remove the support screws from the lower mast jacket.
  4.  
  5. Remove the support bolts from the upper mast jacket and allow the steering wheel to rest on the seat.
  6.  


CAUTION
Remove the upper and lower supports to prevent distortion of the mast jacket.

  1. Remove the attaching screws from the face of the instrument cluster and partially remove the assembly.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the speedometer cable, the speed warning device (if so equipped), and the chassis wiring harness connector. Check the speedometer cable and lubricate it if necessary.
  4.  
  5. Remove the instrument cluster from the car.
  6.  
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  8.  

1969 Models-Standard Cluster

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the instrument panel pad.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air-conditioning connections.
  6.  
  7. Remove the radio brace attachments.
  8.  
  9. Lower the steering column.
  10.  
  11. Remove the attaching screw from the instrument cluster.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the speedometer cable, the wiring for the speed warning device (if so equipped), and any other connections.
  14.  
  15. Remove the cluster assembly from the car.
  16.  
  17. To install, reverse the removal procedure, making sure all the connections are clean and tight. It may be a good idea to lubricate the speedometer cable at this time.

1967-69 Models-Center Console

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the retaining screws and lift the cover from the assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the screws holding each gauge mounting plate to the instrument housing.
  6.  
  7. Carefully remove the gauge plate from the housing and disconnect all connections from the rear of the gauges.
  8.  
  9. To install, reverse the removal procedure, making sure that the oil line fitting to the oil gauge is tight and not leaking.

1970-81 Models

STANDARD INSTRUMENT CLUSTER

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the six screws holding the trim cover beneath the steering column. Remember to remove the two screws above the ash tray.
  4.  
  5. Reach behind the cluster and press in the retainer button on the headlamp switch shaft while pulling on the switch knob.
  6.  
  7. Remove the retaining nut from the switch.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cigarette lighter element, disconnect the lighter wire, and unscrew the retainer from the housing.
  10.  
  11. Look up under the lower edge of the cluster and remove the screw from either side of the steering column.
  12.  
  13. Remove the four screws from the front of the carrier.
  14.  
  15. Remove the screw holding the wiper switch ground wire. It is located under the wiper switch.
  16.  
  17. Detach the connector plugs and remove the carrier.
  18.  
  19. Remove the eight lens screws and the four cluster screws.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the transmission indicator (PRNDL) from the column.
  22.  
  23. Depress the speedometer cable housing tang on the rear of the cluster and tilt the cluster forward.
  24.  
  25. Remove the connectors from the printed circuit board and clock, and free the wiring harness from the cluster.
  26.  
  27. Lift out the cluster.
  28.  
  29. To install, reverse the removal procedure, making sure that all connections are clean and tight, and that the printed circuits are placed with the metallic side to the bulb sockets. It would be a good idea to lubricate the speedometer cable at this time.

OPTIONAL INSTRUMENT CLUSTER

To remove all bulbs, instruments (except speedometer), and printed circuits, it is not necessary (unless air-conditioned) to remove the cluster. The instruments are installed and removed from the rear of the cluster. On cars with air-conditioning, it will be necessary to remove the cluster to remove the ammeter, fuel, and temperature gauges.

When performing any operation behind the cluster, disconnect the negative battery cable first.
