    ADJUSTMENT

    1. Raise the rear of the car and support it with jackstands.
    2.
    3. Push down on the parking brake pedal so that it is two notches (clicks) from the fully released position.
    4.
    5. Loosen the forward equalizer check nut and adjust the rear nut as necessary to obtain a light drag when the rear wheel is turned forward.
    6.
    7. Tighten both check nuts.
    8.
    9. Fully release the parking brake lever and check to see that there is no drag present when the rear wheel is turned forward.
    10.
    11. Lower the car.
    12.
    13. If the parking brake has to be forcibly released, clean and lubricate the cables and equalizer, and also the parking brake assembly, then check the cables for straightness and kinks.

    REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

    1967-70 Models

There are three parking brake cables: the front cable runs between the pedal assembly and the looped center cable; the center cable is a large loop, each end connected to the short rear cables and the center (forward) attached to the front cable with the equalizer; the rear cables are attached to brake shoe actuating levers.

    FRONT CABLE

With the parking brake in the released position, remove the equalizer nut from the equalizer. Remove the cable retainer from the inside of the frame rail and disconnect the other end of the cable from the brake lever assembly. Remove the cables.

    CENTER CABLE

With the parking brake in the released position, remove the equalizer assembly. Remove the center cable from the guides and disconnect it from the rear cable.

    REAR CABLE

Disconnect the forward end from the center cable, remove the frame retainers, and remove the rear end of the cable from the brake actuating levers. In order to do this, the brake drum and shoes must be removed. After replacing the cables, the brakes must be adjusted as described earlier in this section.

    1971-76 Models

    FRONT CABLE

Remove the cable return spring and the equalizer assembly. Remove the cable retaining nut from the frame end. Remove the cable end from the pedal lever and remove the cable retaining bracket. Remove the left kick pad and scuff plate. Pull up the floor mat to expose the retaining clips, remove them, and withdraw the front cable through the hole.

    REAR CABLE

Remove the front cable return spring and equalizer assembly. Unhook the cable from the guide and separate the cables so that either can be removed. Remove the clip from the cable near the front leaf spring bushing. Remove the cable bracket from the body rail near the front leaf spring bushing. Pull the cable through the opening where the cable bracket was located. Remove the brake drum, then remove the end of the cable from the parking brake lever by compressing the spring and lifting the knobbed end from the lever. Compress the locking fingers with a box end wrench and pull the cable through the hole in the brake plate.

    1977-79 Models

    FRONT

Remove the adjusting nut from the equalizer. Remove the retainer clip from the rear portion of the front cable at the frame and from the lever arm. Disconnect the front brake cable from the parking brake lever. Remove the cable. On some models, it may be easier to install the new cable if a heavy cord is tied to either end of the cable to guide it through the openings. Reverse the removal procedure to install the new cable, and adjust the parking brake.

    REAR

Remove the cable clip retainers. Loosen the adjusting nut. Disengage the rear cable at the connector. Bend the retaining fingers and disengage the cable at the brake shoe operating lever. Remove the assembly from the vehicle. Install the new cable by reversing the removal procedure, and adjust the parking brake.
