CAUTION
Steering columns are collapsible. When replacing the wheel, do not hammer or exert any force against the column.

STANDARD WHEEL REPLACEMENT



1967-69 Models

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the column wiring harness from the chassis wiring harness.
  4.  
  5. Remove the horn button cap or ornament and retainer.
  6.  
  7. Remove the receiving cup, spring, bushing, and pivot ring.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering wheel nut and washer.
  10.  
  11. Install a puller and turn the puller bolt clockwise to remove the wheel.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Make sure that the turn signal lever is in the Neutral position before installing the wheel; otherwise, damage may be done to the control.
  2.  
  3. With the turn signal and horn assemblies in place, position the wheel on the shaft and install the washer and nut.
  4.  
  5. Install the spring (dish side up), pivot ring, bushing, and receiving cup.
  6.  
  7. Install the retainer and horn button cap or ornament.
  8.  
  9. Connect the wiring.
  10.  

1970 Models

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel shroud.
  4.  
  5. Remove the three spacer screws and also the spacer, plate, and spring.
  6.  
  7. Remove the shaft nut.
  8.  
  9. Install a wheel puller and turn the puller bolt clockwise to remove the wheel.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Position the eyelet and insulator in the horn contact tower.
  2.  
  3. Position the wheel on the shaft and align the notch in the wheel hub with the mark on the shaft.
  4.  

The horn contact tower must engage the hole in the steering wheel.

  1. Install and tighten the wheel nut.
  2.  
  3. Install the belleville spring with the concave side down, followed by the plate and spacer. Install the spacer screws.
  4.  
  5. Install the wheel shroud and secure it with two screws.
  6.  
  7. Connect the battery cable.
  8.  

1971-81 Models

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel shroud (curved outside cover) and horn contact lead assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel nut.
  6.  
  7. Install the wheel puller, turn the puller bolt clockwise, and remove the wheel.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Set the turn signal lever in a neutral position and tighten the wheel onto the shaft. Overtightening the nut may cause the wheel to rub.
  2.  
  3. Place the shroud onto the wheel while guiding the horn lead into the turn signal tower.
  4.  
  5. Install the shroud screws and connect the battery cable.
  6.  

DELUXE WHEEL REPLACEMENT



1968-69 Models

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. On 1968 models, disconnect the steering column wiring from the chassis wiring harness.
  4.  
  5. Remove the screws from the underside of the wheel.
  6.  
  7. Lift off the steering wheel shroud and disconnect the horn wires.
  8.  
  9. Remove the nut and washer securing the wheel to the shaft.
  10.  
  11. Install a wheel puller, turn the puller bolt clockwise, and remove the wheel.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Position the turn signal cam and horn contact, install the wheel to the shaft, and secure them with a washer and nut.
  2.  
  3. Position the horn wires and, on 1968 models, attach the horn buttons.
  4.  
  5. Install the shroud.
  6.  
  7. Install the screws on the underside of the wheel and, on 1968 models, connect the column wiring.
  8.  
  9. Connect the battery cable.
  10.  

CUSHIONED RIM WHEEL



1971-81 Models

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the horn button cap. Remove the snapring.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper horn insulator, receiver, and belleville spring.
  8.  
  9. Install the wheel puller, turn the puller bolt clockwise, and remove the wheel.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Place the turn signal lever in a Neutral position, position the wheel to the shaft, and tighten the nut.
  2.  
  3. Position the horn lower insulator, eyelet, and spring in the horn contact tower. Install the belleville spring, receiver, and horn upper insulator.
  4.  
  5. Install the horn button cap and connect the battery cable.
  6.
