Fig. Fig. 6: Removing the exhaust manifold

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the air cleaner on carbureted engines.
  4.
  5. If applicable, remove the air cleaner pre-heater shroud.
  6.
  7. Disconnect the air injection reaction pipes, if equipped.
  8.
  9. Unplug the oxygen sensor connector.
  10.
  11. Label and unplug the spark plug wires.
  12.
  13. Remove the spark plug wire heat shields, if equipped.
  14.
  15. Remove any components which may interfere with removal.
  16.
  17. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the manifold and hang it from the frame out of the way.
  18.
  19. On some engines, it will be necessary to bend the locktabs from the bolt. Remove the end bolts, then the center bolts. Remove the manifold.
  20.

A thin wall 6-point socket, sharpened at the leading edge and tapped onto the head of the bolt, simplifies bending the locktabs.

To install:
  1. Make sure the mating surfaces are clean.
  2.
  3. Install a new gasket, if applicable.
  4.
  5. Position the exhaust manifold onto the engine. Torque the attaching bolts to:

    1982-1992 V6 engines: 25 ft lbs. (34 Nm)

    1982-1992 V8 engines: 26 ft lbs. (35 Nm)

  6.
  7. Bend the locktabs over the bolts.
  8.
  9. Connect the exhaust pipe to the manifold.
  10.
  11. Install all components removed.
  12.
  13. Connect the oxygen sensor.
  14.
  15. Install the spark plug wire heat shields.
  16.
  17. Connect the spark plug wires.
  18.
  19. If equipped, install the air cleaner pre-heater shroud.
  20.
  21. If equipped, connect the air injection reaction pipes.
  22.
  23. Connect the battery.
  24.

Fig. Fig. 7: Exhaust manifold bolt torque sequence for 2.5L engine

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery.
  2.
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly, be sure to mark any disconnected hoses for proper reinstallation.
  4.
  5. Unplug the oxygen sensor and disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold.
  6.
  7. Remove the engine oil level dipstick and tube.
  8.
  9. Remove the exhaust manifold attaching bolts and remove the manifold.
  10.

To install:
  1. Position the exhaust manifold onto the engine with a new gasket. Torque the bolts, following the correct sequence, to 44 ft lbs. (60 Nm).
  2.
  3. Install the engine oil level dipstick tube and dipstick.
  4.
  5. Connect the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold.
  6.
  7. Engage the oxygen sensor connector.
  8.
  9. Install the air cleaner assembly and connecting hoses.
  10.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable at the battery.
