The air cleaner has a dual purpose. It not only filters the ducted air entering the engine, but also acts as a flame arrester if the engine should backfire. If an engine maintenance procedure requires the temporary removal of the air cleaner, remove it; otherwise, never run the engine without it.

  1. Clean the dirt and foreign material from the top and sides of the air cleaner housing. This will prevent any foreign material from entering the engine, via the intake manifold.
  3. Remove the nut(s) or screw clamp at the top of the air cleaner. Remove the air cleaner from the top of the assembly.
  5. Remove the air filter.

To install:
  1. Clean the inside of the air cleaner housing using a damp cloth.
  3. Install the air filter into the housing.
  5. Install the top of the air cleaner assembly, making sure it is seated properly.
  7. Secure the cover using the clamp fasteners, bolt and/or wing nut(s).

Fig. Fig. 5: Air cleaner assembly - 1985-92 MPFI and TPI engines

The air cleaner assembly on Camaros equipped with port fuel injection is mounted remotely near the radiator. The air enters the engine by flowing through the air intake duct, throttle body, and into the intake manifold. The air is then directed into the intake manifold runners, through the cylinder heads and into the cylinders.

When removing fasteners, always reinstall them at the same location from which they were removed. If a fastener needs to be replaced, use the correct fastener for that particular application.

To replace the filter assembly, simply remove the retainers from the air cleaner housing, and remove the air filter assembly from the unit.
