Clutch Fork and Release Bearing

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



5-Speed Transmission
1993-95 VEHICLES
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the instrument panel knee bolster assembly.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the clutch master cylinder pushrod from the clutch pedal.
  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the transmission assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the clutch actuator cylinder nuts.
  12.  


WARNING
Do NOT let the actuator cylinder hang by the fluid lines, as this could damage them.

  1. Remove the clutch actuator cylinder and position aside, supporting with a suitable piece of wire.
  2.  
  3. Unfasten the transmission brace nut and bolt/screw, then remove the brace.
  4.  
  5. Remove the flywheel housing cover retaining bolts/screws, then remove the cover.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the flywheel housing bolts/screws, then remove the housing.
  8.  
  9. Remove the clutch release bearing.
  10.  
  11. Remove the clutch fork assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the clutch fork ball stud and washer. Inspect the release bearing, clutch fork and fork ball stud for damage and replace components as necessary.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Install the clutch fork ball stud and washer.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate the clutch ball stud using wheel bearing grease.
  4.  
  5. Install the clutch fork onto the clutch ball stud.
  6.  
  7. Lubricate the recess on the inside diameter of the clutch release bearing and the clutch fork groove using wheel bearing grease.
  8.  
  9. Install the clutch release bearing to the clutch fork.
  10.  
  11. Position the flywheel housing assembly and secure with the retaining bolts/screws. Tighten to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the flywheel housing cover and retain with the bolts/screws. Tighten to 75 inch lbs. (8.5 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Position the transmission brace, install the retaining nut and bolt/screw, then tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the clutch actuator cylinder and secure with retaining nuts. Tighten the nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the transmission assembly.
  20.  
  21. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Connect the clutch master cylinder pushrod to the clutch pedal.
  24.  
  25. Install the instrument panel knee bolster.
  26.  
  27. Connect the negative battery cable.
  28.  

6-Speed Transmission
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the instrument panel knee bolster assembly.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the clutch master cylinder pushrod from the clutch pedal.
  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the transmission assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the flywheel housing cover retaining bolts/screws, then remove the cover.
  12.  
  13. Unfasten the flywheel housing bolts/screws, then remove the housing.
  14.  
  15. Remove the clutch pressure plate retaining bolts/screws, then remove the pressure plate (with the cover) and the driven disc.
  16.  
  17. Remove the clutch release bearing retainer, then remove the release bearing.
  18.  
  19. Remove the clutch fork from the transmission.
  20.  
  21. Unfasten the bolt/screw and the clutch fork T-stud from the transmission assembly. Inspect the release bearing, clutch fork and T-stud for damage and replace components as necessary.
  22.  

To install:
  1. Position the clutch fork T-stud and install the retaining bolt/screw. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Lubricate the clutch fork T-stud using suitable wheel bearing grease.
  4.  
  5. Position the clutch fork onto the T-stud at the first detent position. Do not fully seat the clutch fork on the T-stud until after the transmission is installed. It will fully seat itself when the transmission is installed.
  6.  
  7. Install the release bearing to the pressure plate (and cover) and install the release bearing retainer.
  8.  
  9. Attach the clutch driven plate to the flywheel.
  10.  
  11. Install the pressure plate and cover assembly and install the retaining bolts/screws finger-tight.
  12.  
  13. Align the driven plate with the clutch pilot bearing and pressure plate using tool J 38836 or equivalent alignment arbor.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the clutch pressure plate and cover retaining bolts/screws, in a star pattern to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Position the flywheel housing assembly and secure with the retaining bolts/screws. Tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the flywheel housing cover and retain with the bolts/screws. Tighten to 75 inch lbs. (8.5 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the transmission assembly.
  22.  
  23. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Connect the clutch master cylinder pushrod to the clutch pedal.
  26.  
  27. Install the instrument panel knee bolster.
  28.  
  29. Connect the negative battery cable.
  30.
