Ignition Coil Pack

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



3.4L Engine

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Be sure the ignition is in the OFF or LOCK position. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires or remove the spark plug wire harness assembly from the ignition coil assembly.

  1. Detach all electrical connectors at the coil assembly.
  2.  
  3. Unfasten the retainers, then remove the ignition coil assembly from the engine.
  4.  

  1. If necessary, remove the coil(s) from the module and bracket, as follows:
    1. Remove the bolts retaining the coil(s) to the module and bracket assembly.
    2.  
    3. Remove the ignition coil(s) and seal(s) from the assembly.
    4.  
    5. Separate the module from the bracket.
    6.

To install:
  1. If necessary, assemble the ignition module and coils, as follows:
    1. Position the module to the bracket.
    2.  
    3. Install the seal(s), then position the coil(s) to the module and bracket assembly.
    4.  
    5. Install the retaining bolts and tighten to 25 inch lbs. (2.8 Nm).
    6.

  3. Position the coil assembly to the engine and secure in place using the retainers. Tighten the mounting nuts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Attach all electrical connectors and the spark plug wires or harness assembly.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

3.8L Engine

See Figures 3 and 4

The coil pack on these vehicles may also be referred to as an ignition control module.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Be sure the ignition is in the OFF or LOCK position.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Unplug the spark plug wire harness from the ignition coil pack.
  6.  
  7. Tag and detach the coil pack electrical connectors.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the retaining nuts, then remove the ignition coil pack from the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. If it's necessary to remove the individual coils from the pack, proceed as follows:
    1. Unfasten the bolts/screws attaching the ignition coils to the pack/control module.
    2.  
    3. Remove the ignition coils and seals from the pack or module.
    4.  
    5. Separate the ignition control module from the bracket.

To install:
  1. If the individual coils were removed from the pack/module, proceed as follows:
    1. Position the ignition control module to the bracket.
    2.  
    3. Place the seals and ignition coils to the module/pack.
    4.  
    5. Install the coil-to-pack retaining bolts/screws and tighten to 40 inch lbs. (4.5 Nm).

  1. Position the ignition coil in the vehicle and secure with the retaining nuts. Tighten the nuts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

  3. Attach the electrical connectors and spark plug wire harness to the coil pack.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.
