REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



3.4L and 5.7L Engines

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Drain and remove the oil pan.
  2.  


CAUTION
The EPA warns that prolonged contact with used engine oil may cause a number of skin disorders, including cancer! You should make every effort to minimize your exposure to used engine oil. Protective gloves should be worn when changing the oil. Wash your hands and any other exposed skin areas as soon as possible after exposure to used engine oil. Soap and water, or waterless hand cleaner should be used.

  1. For the 5.7L engine, unfasten the oil pan deflector/baffle nuts.
  2.  
  3. Remove the oil pump-to-rear main bearing cap bolt. Remove the oil pump and the driveshaft.

To install
  1. Install the oil pump and driveshaft. Align the slot on the end of the intermediate shaft with the drive tang on the oil pump drive.
  2.  
  3. For the 5.7L engine, install the oil pan deflector/baffle.
  4.  
  5. For the 3.4L engine, install the bolt/screw attaching the oil pump to the rear crankshaft bearing cap. Tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  6.  
  7. For the 5.7L engine, install the bolt/screw attaching the oil pump to the rear crankshaft bearing cap. Tighten the bolt/screw to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm) and the oil pan baffle nuts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).

  9. Install the oil pan and fill the crankcase with engine oil.
  10.  

3.8L Engine

See Figure 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine front cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the oil filter adapter, pressure valve and spring.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil pump cover attaching bolts/screws and cover.
  8.

  1. Remove the oil pump gear set.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Lubricate the gear set with petroleum jelly.
  2.  
  3. Position the oil pump gear set into the front cover.
  4.  
  5. Pack the gear cavity with petroleum jelly after the gear set has been installed.
  6.  
  7. Install the oil pump cover and secure with the retaining bolts/screws.
  8.  
  9. Install the oil filter adapter, pressure valve and spring.
  10.  
  11. Install the engine front cover.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.
