Rocker Arm (Valve) Cover

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



3.4L Engine

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper intake manifold.
  4.  
  5. To remove the right side valve cover, perform the following:
    1. Remove the EGR pipe assembly, if necessary.
    2.  
    3. Unplug the electrical connections and wiring harnesses as necessary.
    4.  
    5. Label and disconnect the spark plug wires from the distributor.
    6.  
    7. Remove the crankcase vent pipe.
    8.  

  6.  
  7. To remove the left side valve cover, perform the following:
    1. Label and disconnect the spark plug wires.
    2.  
    3. Remove the PCV valve.
    4.  

  8.  
  9. Unfasten the valve cover retaining bolts, then and remove the valve cover.
  10.  
  11. If the cover adheres to cylinder head, shear off by bumping end of rocker arm cover with palm of hand or rubber mallet. If cover still will not come loose, CAREFULLY pry until loose. DO NOT DISTORT THE SEALING FLANGE.

To install:
  1. Clean the sealing surface of the cylinder head and rocker cover. Make sure no oil or old gasket is present when applying the new gasket.
  2.  
  3. Install the cover with a new gasket and tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. If installing the left side valve cover, proceed as follows:
    1. Install the PCV valve.
    2.  
    3. Connect the spark plug wires, as tagged during removal.
    4.  

  6.  
  7. If installing the right side valve cover, proceed as follows:
    1. Install the crankcase vent pipe.
    2.  
    3. Connect the spark plug wires to the distributor, as tagged during removal.
    4.  
    5. Attach any necessary electrical connections and/or wiring harness, as necessary.
    6.  
    7. If removed, install the EGR pipe assembly.
    8.  

  8.  
  9. Install the upper intake manifold.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

3.8L Engine

See Figure 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. To remove the right side cover, perform the following:
    1. Remove the serpentine drive belt.
    2.  
    3. Remove the alternator.
    4.  
    5. Remove the oil fill tube and cap.
    6.  
    7. Remove the transmission level indicator tube mounting nut and reposition the tube, if necessary.
    8.  
    9. Remove the spark plug wiring harness from the retaining clip and reposition the harness out of the way.
    10.  
    11. Remove the evaporative emission canister purge solenoid valve.
    12.  
    13. Loosen the right rear engine lift bracket.
    14.

  5. If installing the left side cover, perform the following:
    1. Remove the ignition coil module and bracket.
    2.  
    3. Remove the EGR valve and adapter.
    4.  
    5. Remove the left front engine lift bracket.
    6.  

  6.  
  7. Unfasten the rocker arm (valve) cover retaining bolts/screws, then remove the cover from the engine. Remove the gasket and replace, if necessary.
  8.  
  9. Thoroughly clean the cover gasket mating surfaces and the bolt threads.

To install:
  1. Properly position the valve cover gasket, then place the cover over it. Apply a suitable thread locking compound to the retaining bolt threads, then install the bolts and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm),

  3. If installing the left side cover, proceed as follows:
    1. Install the left front engine lift bracket.
    2.  
    3. Install the EGR valve and adapter.
    4.  
    5. Install the ignition coil module and bracket.
    6.

  5. If installing the right side cover, perform the following:
    1. Tighten the right rear engine lift bracket studs to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Install the evaporative emission canister purge solenoid valve.
    4.  
    5. Place the spark plug wiring harness in position and secure to the retaining clip.
    6.  
    7. Properly position the transmission level indicator tube and tighten the mounting nut.
    8.  
    9. Install the oil fill tube and cap.
    10.  
    11. Install the alternator.
    12.  
    13. Install the serpentine drive belt.
    14.  

  6.  

5.7L Engine

See Figures 3 through 10

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. To remove the right side cover, follow these procedures:
    1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    2.  
    3. Remove the serpentine drive belt.
    4.  
    5. On automatic transmission equipped cars, remove the transmission fluid level indicator tube.
    6.  
    7. Carefully lower the vehicle.
    8.  
    9. Remove the crankcase vent hose, alternator and brace.
    10.

    1. Remove the secondary air injection pipe from the exhaust manifold.

  1. To remove the left side cover, follow these procedures:
    1. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose.
    2.  
    3. Remove the secondary air injection hose from the pump to the check valve.
    4.  
    5. Remove the secondary air injection pipe from the exhaust manifold.
    6.  
    7. If equipped, remove the accelerator/cruise control servo cable adjuster.
    8.

  1. Unfasten the rocker arm (valve) cover retaining bolts/screws, then remove the cover from the engine. Remove the gasket and replace, if necessary.

  1. Thoroughly clean the cover gasket mating surfaces and the bolt threads.

To install:
  1. Properly position the valve cover gasket, then place the cover over it. Apply a suitable thread locking compound to the retaining bolt threads, then install the bolts and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm),
  2.  
  3. If installing the left side cover, perform the following:
    1. If equipped, install the accelerator/cruise control servo cable adjuster.
    2.  
    3. Attach the secondary air injection pipe fitting to the exhaust manifold.
    4.  
    5. Connect the secondary air injection pipe fitting to the exhaust manifold.
    6.  
    7. Install the brake booster vacuum hose.
    8.

  5. If installing the right side cover, proceed as follows:
    1. Attach the secondary air injection pipe fitting to the exhaust manifold.
    2.  
    3. Install the alternator and rear brace.
    4.  
    5. Connect the crankcase vent hose.
    6.  
    7. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    8.  
    9. If equipped, attach the transmission fluid level indicator tube to the transmission housing.
    10.  
    11. Install the serpentine drive belt.
    12.  
    13. Carefully lower the vehicle.
    14.

  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.
