You can also replace the seal without removing the timing chain cover. Simply pry it from its bore after the crankshaft balancer is removed.

  1. If seal replacement is necessary, remove the seal by carefully prying it out of the cover using a small flat-bladed tool. Do not damage the seal bore or seal contact surfaces.
  2.

To install:
  1. If the front cover was replaced, install the oil filter adapter, pressure relief valve and camshaft sensor.
  2.
  3. If the front seal was removed, insert the seal using a tool J 35354 or equivalent seal installer. Don-t forget to remove the installer when finished.
  4.
  5. Position the timing chain (front) cover gasket, then install the cover. The oil pan bolts can be loosened and the pan lowered slightly to add clearance for front cover installation.
  6.
  7. Apply sealer 12346004 or equivalent to the threads of the bolts and studs. Install the front cover studs and bolts and tighten to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) plus an additional 40 degrees using J 36660 or equivalent torque angle meter.
  8.
  9. Install the water pump.
  10.
  11. Install the crankshaft sensor shield.
  12.
  13. Attach any electrical connections unplugged during removal.
  14.
  15. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  16.
  17. Install the oil pan-to-front cover bolts and tighten to 125 inch lbs. (14 Nm).
  18.
  19. Install the crankshaft balancer.
  20.
  21. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  22.
  23. Connect the radiator inlet hose to the front cover.
  24.
  25. Install the serpentine drive belt and tensioner.
  26.
  27. Install the air cleaner, air cleaner outlet rear duct and resonator duct.
  28.
  29. Fill the engine cooling system.
  30.
  31. Connect the negative battery cable, then start the engine and check for leaks.
  32.
