REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1993-96 Vehicles
CHEVROLET

See Figures 1 through 8

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the driver knee bolster.
  4.  
  5. Remove the trim plate and the bolts/screws from the instrument panel assembly.
  6.

  1. Unfasten the bolts/screws attaching the brackets or radio assembly to the instrument panel carrier.
  2.

  1. Remove the brackets and/or the attached radio assembly from the instrument panel carrier.
  2.

  1. Detach the instrument panel wiring harness electrical connectors and the antenna lead from the radio.
  2.

  1. If necessary, remove the bracket-to-radio attaching bolts/screws and nuts and remove the radio from the brackets.
  2.  

To install:
  1. If removed, install the brackets to the radio and tighten the retaining bolts/screws and nuts. Tighten to 25 inch lbs. (2.8 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Attach the instrument panel wiring harness connector to the radio.
  4.  
  5. Position the brackets and attached radio assembly to the instrument panel carrier.
  6.  
  7. Install the bracket-to-instrument panel carrier retaining bolts/screws and tighten to 16 inch lbs. (1.8 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Position the trim panel and secure with the retaining bolts/screws.
  10.  
  11. Install the driver knee bolster.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  

PONTIAC

See Figures 9 and 10

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the driver knee bolster.
  4.  
  5. Remove the trim plate from the instrument panel.
  6.

  1. If necessary, remove the bolt/screw from the instrument panel tie bar.
  2.  
  3. Remove the retainer and bolt/screw from the bracket.
  4.  
  5. Remove the radio assembly.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the bolts/screws securing the brackets to the instrument panel carrier.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brackets and attached radio assembly from the instrument panel carrier.
  10.  
  11. Detach the wiring harness connector from the radio.
  12.

  1. If necessary, remove the bolts/screws and nuts attaching the radio to the brackets, then remove the radio from the brackets.
  2.  

To install:
  1. If removed, install the brackets to the radio and secure with the retaining bolts/screws and nuts. Tighten to 25 inch lbs. (2.8 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Attach the wiring harness connector to the radio.
  4.  
  5. Position the brackets and attached radio to the instrument panel carrier. Install the retaining bolts/screw and tighten to 16 inch lbs. (1.8 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Place the radio assembly to the instrument panel and install the retainer and bolt/screw to the bracket.
  8.  
  9. If removed, install the bolt/screw to the instrument panel tie bar assembly. Tighten to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the trim plate to the instrument panel assembly.
  12.  
  13. Install the driver knee bolster.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  

1997-98 Vehicles

See Figures 11, 12, 13 and 14

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Unsnap the instrument panel accessory trim plate.
  4.

  1. If equipped on Chevrolet, detach the electrical connectors from the fog lamp, traction control and second gear start switches.

  1. Remove the instrument panel accessory trim plate.
  2.  
  3. Remove the radio bracket bolts/screws and slide the radio out from the instrument panel.
  4.  
  5. Detach the antenna cable and electrical connectors from the radio, then remove the radio from the vehicle.
  6.

To install:
  1. Position the radio and attach the electrical connectors and antenna cable.
  2.  
  3. Slide the radio into the instrument panel.
  4.  

On Pontiacs, install the radio bolts/screws in sequence: lower left first, upper right second, and upper left third.

  1. Install the radio bracket bolts/screws and tighten to 16 inch lbs. (1.8 Nm).
  2.

  1. Install the instrument panel accessory trim plate.
  2.  
  3. If equipped on Chevrolet, attach the electrical connectors to the second gear start, traction control and fog lamp switches.
  4.  
  5. Fasten the instrument panel accessory trim plate to the instrument panel by snapping it into place.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.
