Rear Compartment Liftgate

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



See Figures 1, 2 and 3

  1. Connect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Prop the lid open with a secure support, and place a protective covering along the edges of the rear compartment opening to prevent any damage to the painted surfaces.
  4.  
  5. Remove the headlining trim finishing panel, as follows:
    1. Remove the sunshade retaining bolts/screws, then remove the sunshade.
    2.  
    3. Remove the dome lamp housing.
    4.  
    5. Remove the windshield side upper garnish molding.
    6.  
    7. Remove the quartertrim finish panel.
    8.  
    9. Loosen the seat belt escutcheons, then slide down the seat belt.
    10.  
    11. Unfasten the retainers from the headliner.
    12.  
    13. Pull carefully on the headliner to remove it from the roof panel.
    14.  
    15. Slide the seat belt through the seat belt slots.
    16.  
    17. Remove the headliner from the vehicle through the rear compartment lift window opening.
    18.

  7. Remove the grommet.
  8.  
  9. Tag and detach the necessary electrical connectors.
  10.

  1. Remove the struts from the window panel, as follows:
    1. Detach the strut from the stud on the window panel by unsnapping it.
    2.  
    3. Remove the stud from the strut, then remove the strut from the vehicle.

For the next step, it will be best to have an assistant helping you.

  1. Make sure the panel is securely supported, then unfasten the retaining nuts and remove the rear compartment window panel from the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the gasket from the hinges.
  4.

To install:
  1. Install the gaskets on the hinges.
  2.  
  3. With the help of an assistant, position the rear compartment window panel, aligning the studs on the hinges to the holes. Install the retaining nuts and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the struts to the window panel, as follows:
    1. Position the strut to the quarter inner roof panel.
    2.  
    3. Position the stud through the strut to the quarter inner roof panel. Tighten the stud to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Attach the strut to the stud.
    6.  

  6.  
  7. Engage the electrical connectors, as tagged during removal.
  8.  
  9. Install the grommet as follows:
    1. Route the harness.
    2.  
    3. Apply a soap solution to the grommet.
    4.  
    5. Seat the grommet at the window panel and roof frame.
    6.  

  10.  
  11. Install the headlining trim panel as follows:
    1. Install a new headliner. Peel the backing from the new headliner panel tape and apply to the depressions in the roof panel.
    2.  
    3. Place the headliner in the vehicle through the rear compartment opening.
    4.  
    5. Insert the seat belt into the seat belt slots.
    6.  
    7. Pull the dome lamp electrical connector through the opening.
    8.  
    9. Apply pressure at the centerline of the headliner panel to engage the tape.
    10.  
    11. Install the retainers to the headliner.
    12.  
    13. Slide the seat belt escutcheons up the seat belt and snap into the retractor.
    14.  
    15. Install the quarter trim finish panel.
    16.  
    17. Install the windshield side upper garnish molding.
    18.  
    19. Instlal the dome lamp housing.
    20.  
    21. Install the sunshade and secure with the retaining bolts/screws.
    22.

  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  

ALIGNMENT



See Figure 4

Adjust the rear compartment lift window panel so it is flush to the quarter outer panel and centered in the opening, as follows:

  1. Open the rear compartment lift window panel.
  2.  
  3. Move the rear compartment trim as necessary.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the endgate latch retaining bolts/screws.
  6.  
  7. Close the window panel and move it as required to properly align.
  8.  
  9. Once properly aligned, tighten the retaining bolts/screws to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

  1. Adjust the window panel so it is flush to the quarter trim finish panel by loosening or tightening the bumpers, as necessary.
