Instrument Cluster

WARNING
Many solid state electrical components utilized in these vehicles can be damaged by Electrostatic Discharge (ESD). Some of these vehicles will display a label informing you that they will be damaged by ESD and some will not have labels, but they may be damaged also. To avoid the possible damage to any of these components, follow the steps outlines in Handling Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) sensitive parts in this section.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



See Figures 1 through 11

  1. Disable the SIR system.
  2.  
  3. If not already done, disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. For 1993-95 vehicles, remove the instrument panel upper trim panel, as follows:
    1. Remove the panel from the lower windshield support.
    2.  
    3. Remove the panel from the carrier.
    4.

  1. For 1996-98 vehicles, remove the instrument panel upper trim panel, as follows:
    1. Remove the windshield side upper garnish moldings.
    2.  
    3. Remove the security indicator lamp retainer, and/or daytime running lamp ambient light sensor grille from the upper trim panel.
    4.  
    5. Remove the instrument panel upper trim panel by carefully pulling up at the dual lock fasteners.

  1. For 1996-98 vehicles, remove the instrument panel cluster trim plate bezel, as follows:
    1. Remove the instrument panel insulator and driver knee bolster.
    2.  
    3. Lower the steering column.
    4.  
    5. If equipped, remove the cluster trim plate bolts/screws.
    6.  
    7. Unsnap the instrument panel cluster trim plate bezel.

  1. Unfasten the cluster-to-instrument carrier retaining bolts/screws.

  1. Pull the instrument cluster rearward and detach the electrical connection. Remove the instrument cluster from the vehicle.

To install:
  1. Position the instrument cluster into place.
  2.  
  3. Connect the electrical connection and push the cluster forward.
  4.  
  5. Install the cluster attaching screws. Tighten to 19 inch lbs. (2.2 Nm).

  1. Line up the locator pins and install the cluster trim plate.
  2.  
  3. For 1996-98 vehicles, install the instrument panel cluster trim plate bezel, as follows:
    1. Install the cluster trim plate bezel.
    2.  
    3. If equipped, install the cluster trim plate bezel retaining bolts/screw and tighten to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Raise the steering column.
    6.  
    7. Install the driver knee bolster and instrument panel insulator.
    8.

  5. For 1996-98 vehicles, install the instrument panel upper trim panel, as follows:
    1. Position the upper trim panel, aligning the panel using the locator pins.
    2.  
    3. Apply pressure to the rear of the upper trim panel, engaging the dual lock fasteners with the mating surface.
    4.  
    5. Apply pressure to the front of the instrument panel upper panel engaging the dual lock fasteners with their mating surface.
    6.  
    7. Install the security indicator lamp retainer, and/or daytime running lamp ambient light sensor grille to the upper trim panel.
    8.  
    9. Install the windshield side upper garnish moldings.
    10.

  7. For 1993-95 vehicles, install the instrument panel upper trim panel, as follows:
    1. Position the panel to the carrier. Align the panel using the locator pins. Apply pressure to the rear of the panel engaging the dual lock fasteners with the mating surface.

    3. Secure the panel to the lower windshield support by engaging the dual lock fasteners with the mating surface.
    4.

  9. Connect the negative battery cable. Enable the SIR system.
