Rear Liftgate Lock

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Lock Cylinder

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Open the rear liftgate.
  4.  
  5. For Chevrolets, remove the rear end finish panel, as follows:
    1. Remove the tail lights.
    2.  
    3. Unfasten the retaining nuts, then remove the panel.
    4.  

  6.  
  7. For Pontiacs, remove the tail light filler by removing the tail lights, then removing the filler.
  8.  
  9. Drill out the retaining rivets, then remove the lock cylinder.
  10.

To install:

The tan dot on the lock cylinder must face upward when installing the lock cylinder.

  1. Install the lock cylinder, guiding the lock cylinder shaft through the hole in the rear end panel into the hole in the lock support.
  2.  
  3. Align the lock cylinder.
  4.  
  5. Install the right, then the left rivet.
  6.  
  7. For Pontiacs, install the tail light filler.
  8.  
  9. For Chevrolet, install the rear end finish panel, as follows:
    1. Position the panel, then install the nuts, starting with the outboard nuts and working inward.
    2.  
    3. Tighten the nuts to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Install the tail light assemblies.
    6.  

  10.  
  11. Close the rear liftgate, then connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

Liftgate Latch

See Figure 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Open the rear liftgate.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear compartment trim, as needed.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear compartment lid release switch electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear compartment lift lock release actuator secondary lock retainer and electrical connector.
  10.

  1. Unfasten the retaining bolts/screws, then remove the latch.
  2.  
  3. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  4.  

Striker

See Figure 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Open the rear liftgate.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear compartment lift window inner panel cover.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the retaining nuts, then remove the lock striker.
  8.

  1. Installation is the reverse of the remove procedure.
