Air Cleaner

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

3.4L and 5.7L Engines
EXCEPT 1996-98 5.7L FORMULA, TRANS AM WITH PERFORMANCE PACKAGE

See Figures 1 through 9

The air cleaner assembly is mounted remotely near the radiator. The air enters the engine by flowing through the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor (if equipped), air intake duct, throttle body, and into the intake manifold. The air is then directed into the intake manifold runners, through the cylinder heads and into the cylinders.

When removing fasteners, always reinstall them at the same location from which they were removed. If a fastener needs to be replaced, use the correct fastener for that particular application.

  1. If equipped with a 3.4L engine, perform the following:
    1. Remove the crankcase vent pipe from the rear air intake duct.
    2.
    3. Loosen the clamp that joins the rear air intake duct to the air cleaner outlet duct. Remove the air intake duct.
    4.
    5. Remove the air injection system intake hose.
    6.

  2.
  3. If equipped with a 5.7L (VIN P) engine, perform the following:
    1. Disconnect the hose from the air intake duct.
    2.
    3. Disconnect the air intake duct from the air cleaner assembly.
    4.

  4.
  5. Slide the air cleaner housing up as an assembly. Release the latches from the air cleaner housing and lift out the air cleaner filter.
  6.

To install:
  1. Install the air filter into the air cleaner housing. Snap the air cleaner latches in place.
  2.
  3. Slide the air cleaner assembly into the retainers. Install the rear air intake duct to the throttle body and tighten the clamp.
  4.
  5. If equipped, attach the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector.
  6.
  7. Attach the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor electrical connector.
  8.
  9. Fasten the retainer(s) to the upper radiator support.
  10.
  11. For 3.4L engines, perform the following:
    1. Install the crankcase vent pipe to the rear air intake duct.
    2.
    3. Install the air injection system intake hose.
    4.

  12.
  13. For 5.7L (VIN P) engines, connect the hose to the air intake duct.
  14.

The clamp assembly tension adjustment screw should be located on the side of the intake duct for optimum clamp force. This is important for proper sealing.

  1. Tighten the rear air intake duct clamp and the air cleaner outlet duct clamp to 31 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  2.
  3. Connect the negative battery cable.
  4.

1996-98 5.7L FORMULA, TRANS AM WITH PERFORMANCE PACKAGE

See Figure 10

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
