Power Steering Gear

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicles.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel and tire assemblies.
  4.

  1. Place a drain pan under the steering gear unit.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the inlet and outlet hoses from the steering gear.
  4.

  1. Separate the outer tie rod ends from the knuckles.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering gear coupling shaft from the steering gear.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering gear mounting nuts and bolts, then remove the steering gear from the vehicle.
  6.

To install:
  1. Position the steering gear to the crossmember. Adjust the steering gear so it aligns as straight as possible with the steering gear coupling shaft.
  2.  
  3. Hand-start the retaining bolts and nuts. Using a back-up wrench on the nuts, tighten the bolts/screws to 63 ft. lbs. (85 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Position the steering gear to the coupling shaft.
  6.  
  7. Fasten the outer tie rod ends to the steering knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Connect the inlet and outlet hoses to the steering gear.
  10.  
  11. Install the tire and wheel assemblies.
  12.  
  13. Carefully lower the vehicle, then bleed the power steering system.
  14.
