REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figures 1 through 15

CAUTION
These vehicles are equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. You MUST follow the recommended disarming procedures before performing any work on or around the system. Failure to do so may result in possible deployment of the air bag and/or personal injury.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Properly disable the SIR system, as outlined in Chassis Electrical of this repair guide.
  4.

WARNING
On vehicles with air bags, disable the SIR system. The vehicles wheels must be in the straight ahead position and the key must be in the LOCK position when removing or installing the steering column. Failure to do so may cause the SIR coil assembly to become uncentered and may result in otherwise unneeded SIR repairs.

  1. Make sure the ignition is in the OFF position.
  2.

CAUTION
When carrying a live air bag, make sure the bag and trim cover are pointed away from the body. In the unlikely event of an accidental deployment, the bag will then deploy with minimal chance of injury. In addition, when placing a live air bag on a bench or other surface. Always face the bag and the trim cover up, away from the surface. This will reduce the chance of personal injury if it is accidentally deployed.

  1. Remove the air bag inflator module, as follows:
    1. Loosen the bolts or screws from the back of the steering wheel, using the proper Torx® driver, until the inflatable restraint module can be released from the steering wheel.
    2.

WARNING
When attaching the puller and bolts to the steering wheel, do not thread the bolts all the way through the steering wheel hub into the SIR coil. This will cause damage to the SIR coil.

  1. Install steering wheel puller J 1859-A and steering wheel puller bolts J 38720 onto the steering wheel, then remove the steering wheel.
