Windshield Wiper Blade and Arm

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Blade Assembly
1993-96 VEHICLES

See Figures 1 and 2

Do not grasp the plastic spoiler of the wiper arm.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. If the wiper arms have not been removed, lift the wiper arm until it locks into the service up position.
  4.  


WARNING
Be careful when removing or installing a wiper blade. Accidental bumping can cause the wiper arm to toggle back and strike the windshield, possibly scratching it.

  1. Press down on the locking tab of the blade pivot, then pull the blade downward to detach it from the hook of the wiper arm. Remove the blade from the wiper arm.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Position the pivot of the blade assembly in the hook of the wiper arm, then pull the blade upward until the locking tab of the blade pivot engages in the arm hook.
  2.

  1. Carefully lower the wiper arm and blade onto the windshield.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  

1997-98 VEHICLES

See Figures 3, 4 and 5

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. If the wiper arms have not been removed, lift the wiper arm until it locks into the service up position.
  4.  


WARNING
Be careful when removing or installing a wiper blade. Accidental bumping can cause the wiper arm to toggle back and strike the windshield, possibly scratching it.

  1. Remove the wiper blade from the arm as follows:
    1. Squeeze the ends of the wiper blade clip (J) together and remove the blade from the inside radius of the wiper arm.

    1. Bring the wiper arm assembly out through the opening in the wiper blade.
    2.  


To install
  1. Place the wiper blade on the wiper arm and make sure the retaining clip is secured.
  2.

  1. Carefully lower the wiper arm and blade assembly onto the windshield.
  2.  
  3. Connect the negative battery cable, then turn the wipers on and check for proper operation.
  4.  

Arm Assembly

See Figures 6, 7, 8 and 9

  1. Operate the wipers at the lowest DELAY setting, then shut off the wipers at the inner wipe (end of sweep) position. At the tip of the blade assembly, mark the windshield with a crayon to aid in reassembly.

  3. For Camaros, raise the hood.
  4.  
  5. Lift the wiper arm nut cover, then remove the nut, as shown in the accompanying figure.
  6.

If equipped, do not grasp the plastic spoiler of the wiper arm.

  1. Remove the wiper arm from the linkage driveshaft using tool J-39637.
  2.

To install:
  1. Install the wiper arm on the linkage driveshaft with the tip of the blade aligned with the mark made during removal.
  2.  
  3. Install the nut on the driveshaft.
  4.  

It may be necessary to allow for some movement of a wiper arm when it's nut is being tightened. If the wiper arm moves away from the desired alignment mark, loosen the nut and reposition the wiper.

  1. While holding the wiper arm, tighten the nut to 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Close the nut cover.
  4.  
  5. Run the wipers and check for proper wipe pattern.
