Fig. Fig. 5: HEI/EST distributor with externally mountedcoil removal and installation - V8 engine

Removal and Installation

NOTE
The distributor will have to be removed from the engine and disassembled if the pick-up coil or distributor shaft need to be replaced.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the side of the distributor.
  6.
  7. Remove the distributor cover and wire retainer, if equipped. Turn the retaining screws counterclockwise and remove the cap.
  8.
  9. Mark the relationship of the rotor to the distributor housing and the housing relationship to the engine.
  10.
  11. Remove the distributor retaining bolt and hold-down clamp.
  12.
  13. Pull the distributor up until the rotor just stops turning counterclockwise and again note the position of the rotor.
  14.
  15. Remove the distributor from the engine.
  16.

To install:
  1. Insert the distributor into the engine, with the rotor aligned to the last mark made, then slowly install the distributor the rest of the way until all marks previously made are aligned.
  2.
  3. Install the distributor hold-down clamp and retaining bolt. Torque the hold-down bolt to 27 ft. lbs. (36 Nm).
  4.
  5. If removed, install the wiring harness retainer and secondary wires.
  6.
  7. Install the distributor cap.
  8.
  9. Reconnect the wire connectors to the side of the distributor. Make certain the connectors are fully seated and latched.
  10.
  11. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  12.

NOTE
If the engine was accidentally cranked after the distributor was removed, the following procedure can be used during installation.

  1. Remove the No. 1 spark plug.
  2.
  3. Place a finger over the spark plug hole and have a helper crank the engine slowly until compression is felt.
  4.
  5. Align the timing mark on the pulley to 0 on the engine timing indicator.
  6.
  7. Turn the rotor to point between No. 1 spark plug tower on the distributor cap.
  8.
  9. Install the distributor assembly in the engine and ensure the rotor is pointing toward the No. 1 spark plug tower.
  10.
  11. Install the cap and spark plug wires.
  12.
  13. Check and adjust engine timing.
  14.

  6.
  7. Remove the distributor cap by turning the 4 latches counterclockwise or remove the 2 mounting screws.
  8.
  9. Remove the cap.
  10.
  11. To install, position the cap into place, matching the notch in the cap with the distributor housing and secure it by turning the latches or screws.
  12.
  13. Connect the wire to the cap.
  14.
  15. Connect the tachometer wire, if so equipped, and connect the ignition wires to the distributor cap, in there original location.
  16.

Rotor
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the distributor cap.
  4.
  5. Unscrew the two rotor attaching screws (integral coil only) and then lift off the rotor.
  6.
  7. To install, position the rotor into place and secure the rotor with the 2 rotor attaching screws (integral coil only).
  8.
  9. Install the distributor cap.
  10.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
