Fig. Fig. 1: Crankshaft sprocket removal - 5.0L (VIN Y) engine

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the timing chain and camshaft sprocket.
  4.
  5. Remove the spark plugs.
  6.

The crankshaft key has a blind keyway. The key must be removed before removing the crankshaft sprocket.

  1. Remove the crankshaft key.
  2.
  3. Remove the crankshaft sprocket, using removal tool BT-6812, J-25287, J-21052 or equivalent.
  4.

To install:
  1. Place the timing chain on a flat surface.
  2.
  3. Insert the camshaft and crankshaft timing sprockets into the timing chain with the timing marks aligned. Ensure this alignment is maintained through out the remaining procedure.
  4.
  5. Place the sprockets with the timing chain into position.
  6.
  7. Rotate the camshaft sprocket as required until it engages with the camshaft. With the camshaft sprocket engaged, install the fuel pump eccentric with the flat side toward the engine.
  8.
  9. Install the camshaft sprocket bolt until finger-tight.
  10.
  11. Rotate the crankshaft until the crankshaft sprocket and keyway are in alignment. When the keyway is aligned, tap the crankshaft key into place with a brass hammer until the key bottoms.
  12.
  13. Check the timing marks are still in alignment.
  14.

When the timing marks are aligned, the No. 6 piston is at TDC. When both timing marks are on top, the No. 1 piston is in the firing position.

  1. After the timing gear alignment is verified, torque the camshaft sprocket (fuel pump eccentric) bolt to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
  2.
  3. Install the camshaft thrust button and spring. Install the crankshaft oil slinger.
  4.
  5. Install front cover using new gasket.
  6.
  7. Install fuel pump using new gasket.
  8.
  9. Install the spark plugs and connect the negative battery cable.
  10.
