REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION



EXCEPT 5.0L (VIN Y) ENGINE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the air cleaner assembly.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the wire connectors at the wiper motor and remove the fuse cover on V8 engines only. Remove the distributor cap and wires.
  4.  
  5. Remove the transmission and oil dipsticks.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper fan shroud.
  8.  
  9. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Drain the engine oil.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the exhaust pipe at the manifolds. Remove the flywheel cover. On the 4.3L engine, disconnect the AIR pipe to converter at the exhaust manifold.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler lines at the clips on the oil pan.
  16.  
  17. Remove the transmission dipstick tube and linkage as required.
  18.  
  19. Remove the starter motor assembly.
  20.  
  21. If equipped with an oil level sensor, it must be disconnected and removed to prevent possible damage to the oil level sensor, oil pump pickup screen and pipe.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the engine mount through-bolts and safely raise and support the front of the engine only as far as necessary to remove the oil pan.
  24.  
  25. Remove the oil pan attaching nuts, bolts and reinforcement.
  26.  
  27. Place the crankshaft timing mark to the 6 o'clock position in order to move the crankshaft out of the way, then remove the pan and discard the old gasket.
  28.  

To install:
  1. Clean the gasket mating surfaces. Apply a small amount of 1052914 or equivalent sealer to the front and rear cover to cylinder block junctions and continue bead 1 inch in either direction from the radius of the cavity.
  2.  
  3. Install the new gasket on the oil pan, and position the oil pan in place with loosely installed nuts, bolts and reinforcement.
  4.  
  5. Lower the engine.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the oil pan nuts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm) and bolts to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the engine mount through-bolts.
  10.  
  11. If equipped, install the oil level sensor and electrical connection.
  12.  
  13. Install the starter motor assembly.
  14.  
  15. Connect the transmission fluid cooler lines to the clips on the oil pan and install the transmission dipstick tube and linkage.
  16.  
  17. Install the flywheel cover. Connect the exhaust pipe to the manifolds. On the 4.3L engine, connect the AIR pipe to converter at the exhaust manifold.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Install the upper fan shroud.
  22.  
  23. Install the transmission and oil dipsticks.
  24.  
  25. Install the distributor cap and wires. Install the fuse cover and connect the wiper motor wiring connector.
  26.  
  27. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  28.  
  29. Reconnect the battery cable, refill crankcase with proper engine oil and check engine for leaks.
  30.  

5.0L (VIN Y) ENGINE

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove oil level indicator.
  4.  
  5. Remove upper fan shroud and attaching screws.
  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Drain oil pan.
  10.  
  11. Remove flywheel cover, crossover pipe and starter.
  12.  
  13. Install engine support and adapter tools BT-7109, BT-7203 and BT-6501 or equivalent.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect engine mounts at cylinder block.
  16.  
  17. Carefully raise front of engine high enough and remove oil pan.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Clean the gasket mating surfaces and apply 1050026 or equivalent sealer to both sides of the new gasket.
  2.  
  3. Position gasket in place on the oil pan. Wipe front and rear seals with engine oil and position in place.
  4.  
  5. Apply 1052915 or equivalent RTV sealer to oil pan seals and install oil pan.
  6.  
  7. Install oil pan bolts, tighten to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm), and nuts, tighten to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Lower engine sufficiently to install mounts, then lower engine fully and remove bar.
  10.  
  11. Install the crossover pipe, starter and flywheel cover.
  12.  
  13. Lower vehicle and install oil level indicator.
  14.  
  15. Install upper fan shroud and attaching screws.
  16.  
  17. Fill crankcase with engine oil, connect the negative battery cable and check for leaks.
