  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove cooling fan as follows:
    1. Remove upper and lower fan shrouds.
    2.
    3. Remove nuts and fan clutch with cooling fan.
    4.
    5. Remove spacer if equipped, and if necessary remove bolts connecting cooling fan and clutch.
    6.

  4.

If equipped with a clutch fan, keep the fan in an upright position during repairs to prevent the silicone fluid from leaking out.

  1. Loosen and remove the serpentine belt from the coolant pump pulley and remove the pulley.
  2.
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.

CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by the ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

  1. Unfasten the heater bypass and radiator hose from the pump, as equipped.
  2.
  3. If required, remove the alternator, air conditioning compressor and/or power steering brackets.
  4.
  5. Remove the bolts securing the water pump and remove the pump.
  6.

To install:
  1. Clean cylinder block and coolant pump gasket surfaces and discard old gaskets.
  2.
  3. Place new gaskets on coolant pump and mounting bolts and attach coolant pump making sure gaskets remain in proper position. Tighten mounting bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  4.
  5. If removed, connect the alternator, air conditioning compressor and/or power steering brackets.
  6.
  7. Fasten heater bypass and radiator hose, as equipped, to the pump.
  8.
  9. Attach coolant pump pulley and serpentine belt to the coolant pump.
  10.

WARNING
Inspect fan blade for bends or damage. Do not use or attempt to repair a fan blade which has been bent or damaged. It is essential that a fan blade remains in balance to prevent failure and possible injury.

  1. Attach cooling fan as follows:
    1. Attach cooling fan to the fan clutch, if removed, with bolts. Tighten bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
    2.
    3. Place spacer, if equipped, and attach fan assembly to the cooling pump. Be sure to align reference marks on the fan clutch and coolant pump hub.
    4.
    5. Tighten nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
    6.
    7. Attach upper and lower fan shrouds and tighten screws to 53 inch lbs. (5.8 Nm).
    8.

  2.
  3. Connect the negative battery cable and add coolant to engine.
  4.
  5. Start engine and check for leaks.
  6.

5.0L (VIN Y) ENGINE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain the cooling system.
  2.

  1. Disconnect the lower radiator hose, the heater hose and the by-pass hose from the water pump.
  2.
  3. Remove the fan assembly, the drive belts and the water pump pulley.
  4.
  5. Remove the alternator, the power steering pump and the air conditioning compressor brackets, then move the units aside.
  6.
  7. Remove the water pump mounting bolts, noting where each bolt came from since several different bolt sizes are used and then remove the pump assembly.
  8.

To install:
  1. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces. Use new gaskets apply sealant to the gasket mating surface on the pump.
  2.
  3. Install the water pump and bolts. Torque the mounting bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  4.
  5. Install the alternator, the power steering pump and the air conditioning compressor brackets.
  6.
  7. Install the pulley and fan assembly, then the drive belts.
  8.
  9. Reconnect the lower radiator hose, the heater hose and the by-pass hose to the water pump.
  10.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable. Fill the cooling system, start the engine and inspect for leaks.
