Lower Control Arm

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely and remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front coil spring and shock absorber.
  4.  
  5. Remove and the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower control arm attaching bolts and remove the assembly.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Install the lower ball joint stud into the steering knuckle.
  2.  
  3. Position spring and shock absorber in place and install the lower control arm.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the lower control arm bolt/nuts to 92 ft. lbs. (125 Nm), the lower ball joint stud nut to 83 ft. lbs. (112 Nm) on 1990-91 vehicles or 79 ft. lbs. (107 Nm) for 1992-93 vehicles, and the shock absorber lower attaching bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install new cotter pins on all appropriate nuts.
  8.  
  9. Install wheel and tire assembly.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle and check alignment.
  12.

Front Bushing

  1. Remove the lower control arm assembly from the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Using a blunt chisel, drive the bushing flare located on the inside of the control arm, down flush with the bushing. This will enable the bushing to be pressed from the control arm easier.
  4.  
  5. Using the tools as shown in the illustration, press the bushings from the control arm.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Position the busing in the control arm and using the tools shown, press the bushing in.
  2.  
  3. Using the flaring tool as shown in the illustration, flare the front bushing.
  4.  
  5. Install the rear bushing and install the control arm onto the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle and torque the control arm pivot shaft nuts to 92 ft. lbs. (125 Nm).

  1. Remove the lower control arm assembly from the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Using the tools as shown in the illustration, press the bushings from the control arm.
  4.  
  5. To install, position the busing in the control arm and using the tools shown, press in the bushing.
  6.  
  7. Install the front bushing, as required and install the control arm onto the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle and torque the control arm pivot shaft nuts to 92 ft. lbs. (125 Nm).
