Steering Knuckle and Spindle

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the ABS wheel speed sensor, if equipped.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the caliper assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the dust cap, cotter pin, nut and washer from the spindle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the hub and rotor assembly from the spindle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rotor shield and attaching bolts from the spindle.
  16.  
  17. Separate the tie rod from the steering knuckle.
  18.  
  19. Remove knuckle seal, if the knuckle is to be replaced.
  20.  
  21. Position a floor jack under the control arm near the spring seat and raise the jack until it just supports the lower control arm.
  22.  

In order to retain the spring and control arm in its original position, the jack must remain under the control arm during the complete removal and installation procedure. It is also recommended to install a spring compressor to further secure the coil spring.

  1. Separate the ball joints from the steering knuckle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering knuckle.
  4.  

To install:
  1. Install the steering knuckle onto the lower ball joint stud.
  2.  
  3. Lower the upper control arm ball joint stud into the steering knuckle tapered hole.
  4.  
  5. Install the ball joint nuts, torque the upper nut to 60 ft. lbs. (82 Nm) and the lower nut to 83 ft. lbs. (112 Nm) on 1990-91 vehicles or 79 ft. lbs. (107 Nm) for 1992-93 vehicles.
  6.  
  7. Install the rotor splash shield and attaching bolts. Tighten bolts to 124 inch lbs. (14 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the tie rod and torque the nut to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install cotter pin in all castellated nuts.
  12.  
  13. Install rotor, bearings, washer and nut and adjust.
  14.  
  15. Install a cotter pin in wheel bearing castellated nut.
  16.  
  17. Install dust cap.
  18.  
  19. Install caliper assembly.
  20.  
  21. Install wheel assembly.
  22.  
  23. Install ABS wheel speed sensor.
  24.  
  25. Remove jack assembly, lower the vehicle.
  26.  
  27. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  28.  
  29. Road test vehicle.
