REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Raise the vehicle and support it safely. Be sure the rear axle assembly is supported safely.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the ABS rear axle speed sensor connector, if equipped.
  4.  
  5. Remove the shock absorbers from axle housing, if applicable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the driveshaft.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake line junction block bolt at axle housing, disconnect brake lines at junction block.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect upper control arms from axle housing, and remove springs.
  12.  
  13. Remove rear wheels, drums and, if necessary, brake components.
  14.  
  15. Remove the axle shaft.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect brake lines from the axle housing clips.
  18.  
  19. Remove brake backing plates.
  20.  
  21. With a helper to stabilize the housing, disconnect the lower control arms from the axle housing.
  22.  
  23. Lower the rear axle housing from the hoist.
  24.  

To install:
  1. Raise rear axle housing into place with a hoist.
  2.  
  3. With a helper to stabilize the housing, install lower and upper control arms and hand tighten bolts.
  4.  
  5. Install brake backing plates and position brake lines under housing clips.
  6.  
  7. Install the axle shaft.
  8.  
  9. Install brake components, if removed, rear drums and wheels.
  10.  
  11. Install springs.
  12.  
  13. Connect brake lines to the junction block and the junction block to the rear axle housing.
  14.  
  15. Install the driveshaft.
  16.  
  17. Install the ABS sensor connector.
  18.  
  19. Install shock absorbers, where applicable.
  20.  
  21. Fill axle with suitable gear oil.
  22.  
  23. Torque upper and lower control arms with the weight of the vehicle on the axle.
  24.  
  25. Remove supports and lower vehicle, bleed the brake system as necessary.
  26.  

1991-93
  1. Raise the vehicle and support it safely. Be sure the rear axle assembly is supported safely.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the ABS rear axle speed sensor connector.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the automatic level sensor control link, if equipped.
  6.  
  7. Remove the driveshaft.
  8.  
  9. Remove rear wheels, drums and, if necessary, brake components.
  10.  
  11. Remove axle shaft.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the parking brake cables. Remove the brake backing plate and rear brake pipes from the rear hose fittings. Plug brake pipes to prevent fluid loss and to protect from dirt.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect bolts attaching rear brake hose fitting to housing and remove hose fitting.
  16.  
  17. If replacing housing, remove rear brake pipes from housing.
  18.  
  19. With a helper, remove rear springs and disconnect upper and lower control arms.
  20.  
  21. Lower rear axle housing from hoist.
  22.  

To install:
  1. Raise rear axle housing into place with a hoist.
  2.  
  3. With a helper to stabilize the housing, install lower and upper control arms.
  4.  
  5. Install rear springs.
  6.  
  7. Attach rear brake pipes to housing with retaining clips or straps, if housing was replaced.
  8.  
  9. Connect rear brake fitting and attaching bolt to housing. Tighten bolt to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Unplug and connect rear brake pipes to rear brake hose fitting. Tighten fitting to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect parking brake cable and brake backing plate.
  14.  
  15. Install axle shaft.
  16.  
  17. Install brake components, drums and rear wheels.
  18.  
  19. Install the driveshaft.
  20.  
  21. Connect the automatic level control sensor link and the ABS rear axle speed sensor connector.
  22.  
  23. Fill axle housing with suitable gear oil.
  24.  
  25. Remove support from the housing and lower the vehicle.
  26.  
  27. Be sure to bleed the brake system, as required.
  28.
