Timing Belt Cover

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1.8L OHC Engines

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Unfasten the alternator pivot bolts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the power steering belt.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the two upper timing belt cover bolts.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the canister purge hose.
  10.  
  11. Raise the car and support it safely.
  12.  
  13. Remove the right front wheel and the splash shield.
  14.  
  15. Unfasten the two lower timing cover bolts.
  16.  
  17. Carefully lower the car, then remove the timing belt cover.
  18.  
  19. Reverse the above procedure to install.
  20.

2.0L OHC Engines

See Figures 2, 3 and 4

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the serpentine belt. Unfasten the belt tensioner bolt, the tensioner arm will swing down, then remove the tensioner.
  4.  
  5. Either unsnap (upper first) or unfasten the cover bolts and nuts, then remove the cover.
  6.

To install:
  1. Install the cover by snapping it in place, or secure with the retaining bolts and nut. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Place the serpentine belt tensioner into position, then tighten the retaining bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm). Install the serpentine belt.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.
