Stabilizer Shaft (Sway Bar)

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Allow the front suspension to hang free.
  2.  
  3. For vehicles through 1991, remove the left front wheel and tire. For 1992-94 vehicles, remove both front wheel and tire assemblies.
  4.  
  5. Detach the stabilizer shaft from the control arms.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the retaining clamps, then disconnect the stabilizer shaft from the support assemblies.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear and center bolts from the suspension support assembly, then loosen, but do not remove, the front bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the stabilizer shaft with the insulators.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Position the stabilizer shaft with the insulators, into the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Fasten the clamps attaching the stabilizer shaft to the suspension support assemblies and hand-tighten the retainers.
  4.  
  5. Move the suspension support assemblies into position and hand-tighten the bolts.
  6.  
  7. Install the nut attaching the stabilizer shaft to the stabilizer links.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the suspension support bolts, in sequence, as follows:

    Center bolts first, to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm)
     
    Front bolts second, to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm)
     
    Rear bolts third, to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm)
     

  10.  
  11. Tighten the stabilizer shaft-to-support assembly nuts to 16-22 ft. lbs. (22-30 Nm) and the stabilizer shaft to control arm nuts to 13-22 ft. lbs. (17-30 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Tighten the clamp nuts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the wheel and tire assemblies.
  16.  
  17. Carefully lower the vehicle.
