Ignition Coil

TESTING



See Figure 1

  1. Detach the primary wiring connectors and secondary coil wire from the ignition coil.
  2.  
  3. Using an ohmmeter on the high scale, connect one lead to a grounding screw and the second lead to one of the primary coil terminals.
  4.  
  5. The reading should be infinite. If not, replace the ignition coil.
  6.  
  7. Using the low scale, place the ohmmeter leads on both the primary coil terminals.
  8.  
  9. The reading should be very low or zero. If not, replace the ignition coil.
  10.

  1. Using the high scale, place one ohmmeter lead on the high tension output terminal and the other lead on a primary coil terminal.
  2.  
  3. The reading should NOT be infinite. If it is, replace the ignition coil.
  4.  

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1982-84 Vehicles
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the fuel pump outlet pipe from the carburetor, then detach the fuel pump inlet hose.
  6.  
  7. Remove the vacuum pipe bracket retaining nut at the coil, then move the pipe aside for access.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the two fuel pump retaining nuts, then remove the fuel pump and gasket.
  10.  
  11. Remove the coil mounting bolts and stud.
  12.  
  13. Detach the electrical connectors, then remove the coil.
  14.  
  15. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  16.  

1985-86 1.8L (VIN O) Engine

See Figure 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the ignition coil mounts. There is usually one bolt and one stud.
  6.  
  7. Detach the coil electrical connectors, then remove the coil.
  8.

To install:
  1. Position the coil, then attach the electrical connectors.
  2.  
  3. Secure the coil using the attaching bolt(s) and stud(s).
  4.  
  5. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

1985-86 2.0L (VIN P) Engine
EXCEPT FIRENZA
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Label and detach the vacuum pipes from the vacuum pump, then remove the pump.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the coil mounting bolts.
  8.  
  9. Detach the coil electrical connectors, then remove the ignition coil.
  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  12.  

FIRENZA
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner hot air heat tube.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the retaining bolt(s) and/or stud(s), then detach the electrical connectors and remove the ignition coil from the vehicle.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Position the coil in the vehicle, then attach the electrical connectors and secure using the bolts and nuts.
  2.  
  3. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Install the air cleaner hot air tube.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

1985-86 2.8L (VIN W) Engine

See Figure 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Detach the two electrical connectors from the ignition coil.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the 3 bolts and one screw securing the ignition coil to the bracket.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the ignition coil lead from the distributor, then remove the coil.
  8.

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

1987-89 2.0L (VIN K & M) Engine

See Figures 4, 5, 6 and 7

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. If necessary for access to the coil, remove the air cleaner assembly.
  4.  
  5. Detach the coil wire and electrical connectors.
  6.

  1. Unfasten the coil mounts, there is usually one bolt and one stud, and remove the coil from the vehicle.

To install:
  1. Position the coil in the vehicle, then attach the electrical connectors.

  3. Secure the ignition coil using the retaining bolts and/or nuts.
  4.  
  5. If removed, install the air cleaner assembly.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.
