REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1982-88 Vehicles

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the left side instrument panel hush panel.

  1. Remove the lower steering column trim cover and A/C outlet.
  2.  
  3. Remove center A/C duct and right close out panel (2 clips hold the A/C duct in the center). Disconnect the courtesy light.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten three steering column-to-instrument panel bolts and lower the steering column.
  6.  
  7. Remove the glove box door and trunk release switch, if so equipped.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the two radio-to-instrument panel screws, then detach the electrical connectors and antenna lead from radio.
  10.  
  11. Remove the four cluster to instrument panel screws, disconnect the speedometer cable and remove the screw from the speed sensor.
  12.  
  13. Unfasten the three heater A/C control-to-instrument panel screws. Remove clip and screw securing the bowden cable to heater door.
  14.  
  15. Remove trim plate at right of steering column (spring clip attachment).
  16.  
  17. Detach the lighter connector. Remove headlamp switch knob and the trimplate at the left of the steering column. Unfasten the plastic nut at the headlamp switch, then remove the switch.
  18.  
  19. Remove rear defogger switch, if so equipped. Remove ashtray assembly and ashtray light. Remove hood release cable handle. There is one screw and a plastic nut securing the handle.
  20.  
  21. Remove defroster grilles by carefully prying them up, then unfasten the four screws at defroster outlets.
  22.  
  23. Unfasten the retaining screw, then remove the convenience center, then unfasten the two nuts and screw holding the instrument panel harness and bulk head connector. Remove the brace-to-glove box screw.
  24.  
  25. Remove the nuts at either side of the instrument panel carrier at the lower back of panel, then detach the electrical connectors (The instrument panel duct work must be removed from harness).
  26.  
  27. Remove the carrier and lay on seat. Remove A/C ductwork, screws and clips attaching the wiring harness to carrier.
  28.  
  29. Remove the radio speakers and grilles.
  30.  

To install:
  1. Install the radio speakers and grilles.
  2.  
  3. Install the carrier. Install A/C ductwork, screws and clips attaching the wiring harness to carrier.
  4.  
  5. Fasten the nuts at either side of instrument carrier lower back of panel and attach the electrical connectors.
  6.  
  7. Install the convenience center and secure with the retaining screw, and fasten the instrument panel harness and bulk head connector with the 2 nuts and screw. Install the brace-to-glove box screw.
  8.  
  9. Install the defroster grilles by snapping them into place, and fasten the four screws at defroster outlets.
  10.  
  11. Install rear defogger switch, if so equipped. Install ashtray assembly and ashtray light. Install hood release cable handle and secure with the screw and plastic nut.
  12.  
  13. Attach the lighter connector. Install headlamp switch knob and trimplate at left of steering column. Install the switch, Fasten the plastic nut at headlamp switch.
  14.  
  15. Install the trim plate at right of steering column and secure with the spring clip attachment.
  16.  
  17. Fasten the three heater A/C control-to-I.P. screws. Install clip and screw securing bowden cable to heater door.
  18.  
  19. Connect the speedometer cable and fasten the screw in speed sensor. Fasten the four cluster-to-instrument panel screws.
  20.  
  21. Attach the electrical connectors and antenna lead to radio. Install the 2 radio-to-I.P. screws.
  22.  
  23. Install the glove box door and trunk release switch, if so equipped.
  24.  
  25. Raise steering column, then secure with the three steering column-to-instrument panel bolts.
  26.  
  27. Install center A/C duct and right close out panel (2 clips hold the A/C duct in the center). Connect the courtesy light.
  28.  
  29. Install the lower steering column trim cover and A/C outlet.
  30.  
  31. Fasten the left side instrument panel hush panel.
  32.  
  33. Connect the negative battery cable.
  34.  

1989-94 Vehicles

See Figure 4

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the right and left sound insulators, steering column filler and the right and left instrument panel trim plates.
  4.  
  5. Remove the console housing and glove box door.
  6.  
  7. Remove the heater and A/C control head. For details, please refer to the procedure in Chassis Electrical of this repair guide.
  8.  
  9. Remove the convenience center. Disconnect the forward lamp harness and engine harness from bulkhead.

  1. Remove the bulkhead from cowl. Remove the hood release handle (retained by two set screws), and defroster grilles.
  2.  
  3. Unfasten the four upper instrument panel retaining screws located in defroster duct openings. Remove the two lower corner instrument panel retaining nuts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the screw from the instrument panel brace at left side of instrument panel compartment opening.
  6.  
  7. For vehicles equipped with a manual transaxle, unfasten the two nuts securing the wire harness to the neutral start switch.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the three steering column retaining bolts. There are two at the instrument panel pad and one at the cowl and lower steering column.
  10.  
  11. Pull the instrument panel assembly out far enough to disconnect the ignition switch, headlamp dimmer switch and the turn signal switch. Tag and detach all other electrical wiring connectors, vacuum lines and radio antenna lead to remove the instrument panel assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the instrument panel with wiring harness attached.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Position the instrument panel to the cowl and attach all electrical connectors and vacuum hoses.
  2.  
  3. Install the three steering column retaining bolts. Install the screw into instrument panel brace at left side of instrument panel compartment, then tighten to 57 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Fasten the two lower corner instrument panel retaining nuts, then tighten to 12 inch lbs. (2 Nm). Install the four screws through defroster ducts into cowl, then tighten to 12 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  6.  
  7. For vehicles equipped with a manual transaxle, install the two lower nuts securing the wire harness to neutral start switch.
  8.  
  9. Install defroster grilles, hood release handle, bulkhead and forward lamp and engine harness into bulkhead.
  10.  
  11. Install convenience center, heater A/C control assembly and glove box door.
  12.  
  13. Fasten the console housing, right and left trim plates and the steering column filler.
  14.  
  15. Secure the the left and right sound insulators.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.
