REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Front Turn Signal and Parking Lights

See Figure 1

Bulbs at the front of the car can normally be replaced from beneath the car or from under the hood. Some bulbs may require removal of the outer lens. Remove the socket from the lamp housing by twisting, then replace the bulb and reinstall the socket.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. On early model vehicles, unfasten the retaining screws, then remove the bezel and light housing from the front fascia of the vehicle. Remove the bulb.
  4.
  5. On later model vehicles, remove the lamp assembly, unfasten the socket from the lamp housing by turning it counterclockwise, then remove the lamp from the socket by pressing in and turning counterclockwise.
  6.

To install:
  1. Install the replacement lamp into the socket, matching the directional alignment pins on the base of the bulb with the complementary slots in the socket. This will assure that the proper filament is energized at the right time; i.e.: the turn signal filament and not the parking lamp filament is energized when the turn signal is turned on.
  2.
  3. If you can get to the bulb from the engine compartment, push the lamp into the socket and turn clockwise. Install the socket to the lamp housing by turning clockwise.
  4.
  5. If the bulb can't be accessed from the engine compartment, after the bulb is installed, fasten the housing and bezel to the front fascia of the vehicle.
  6.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.
  9. Check operation of the parking lamp and turn signal.
  10.

Front Side Marker Lights

See Figure 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. If equipped, manually crank up the head lamp door with the hood open.
  4.
  5. If necessary, remove the headlamp assembly for access to the side marker light retaining screws.
  6.

  1. Unfasten the side marker housing attaching screws.
  2.
  3. Lower the housing far enough to remove the socket from the housing by turning 45° counterclockwise.
  4.
  5. Remove the bulb and socket assembly from the housing, then detach the bulb from the socket.
  6.

To install:
  1. Position the bulb into the socket making sure it is secure.
  2.
  3. Install the socket to the lamp housing.
  4.
  5. Secure the socket to the lamp housing by turning 45° clockwise.
  6.
  7. Install the side marker housing, then fasten using the attaching screws.
  8.
  9. If necessary, install the headlight assembly.
  10.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.
  13. If equipped, lower the headlamp door by turning the head lamps on and off.

Rear Stop And Turn Signal Lamps

See Figures 3 and 4

Various methods are employed to remove and install the components of the tail lamp assemblies. Tail lamp bulbs can be replaced by removing the screws which retain the lamp assemblies to the rear end panel and then removing the lamp assemblies. On some models it will be necessary to remove the wing nut inside the rear compartment which retains the tail lamp to the body.

Fig. Fig. 4: ... then remove the bulb from the socket

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Open the trunk.
  4.
  5. Remove the nuts or other retainers from the rear trim, then remove the trim.
  6.
  7. From inside the trunk, unfasten the wing nuts or other retainers securing the tail lamp housing, then pull the tail lamp assembly out so the bulb sockets can be accessed.
  8.
  9. Depending upon vehicle application, remove the lamp socket either by rotating it counterclockwise (approximately 1 / 4 turn) until the plastic tabs disengage, or by squeezing the metal tangs while pulling the socket from the light assembly.
  10.
  11. Remove the bulb from the socket using the appropriate method. Bulbs with blade-type bases pull straight out, while those with round bases and protruding pins (bayonet-type bulbs) must be depressed, then rotated counterclockwise (approximately 1 / 8 turn) before pulling out.
  12.

To install:
  1. Secure the bulb in the socket using the appropriate method. Bulbs with blade-type bases push straight in, while those with round bases and protruding pins (bayonet-type bulbs) must be inserted, then depressed and rotated clockwise (approximately 1 / 8 turn).
  2.
  3. Install the lamp socket using the appropriate method. Depending on the type of socket, either engage the plastic tabs, and rotate the socket clockwise (approximately 1 / 4 turn), or push on the socket until the metal tangs engage.
  4.
  5. Install the housing cover nuts/retainers.
  6.
  7. Install the rear trim.
  8.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable, then check the operation of the rear lights.
