LINKAGE



No adjustments are possible on the 1988-94 manual transaxle shifting cables or linkage. If the transaxle is not engaging completely, check for stretched cables, broken shifter components or a faulty transaxle.

4-Speed
1982-87 VEHICLES

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Place the transaxle in 1st gear, then loosen the shift cable attaching nuts E at the transaxle lever D and F .
  4.  
  5. Remove the console trim plate and remove the shifter boot and retainer.
  6.  
  7. With the shift lever in the 1st gear position (pulled to the left and held against the stop) insert a yoke clip to hold the lever hard against the reverse lockout stop as shown in view D . Install a No. 22 ( 5 / 32 in.) drill bit into the alignment hole at the side of the shifter assembly as shown in view C .
  8.  
  9. Remove the lash from the transaxle by rotating the upright select lever (lever D) while tightening the cable attaching pin nut E .
  10.  
  11. Tighten nut E on letter F .
  12.  
  13. Remove the drill bit and yoke at the shifter assembly, install the shifter boot and retainer and connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  
  17. Install the shifter boot and trim plate.
  18.  
  19. Road test the vehicle to check for good gate feel during shifting. Fine tune the adjustment as necessary.

5-Speed
1983-85 VEHICLES
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Place the transaxle in 3rd gear. Remove the lock pin H and reinstall with the tapered end down. This will lock the transaxle in 3rd gear.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the shift cable attaching nuts E at the transaxle lever G and F .
  6.  
  7. Remove the console trim plate and remove the shifter boot. Remove the console.
  8.  
  9. Install a No. 22 ( 5 / 32 in.) drill bit into the alignment hole at the side of the shifter assembly as shown in view A .
  10.  
  11. Align the hole in select lever (view B) with the slot in the shifter plate and install a 3 / 16 in. drill bit.
  12.  
  13. Tighten nut E at levers G and F .
  14.  
  15. Remove the drill bits from the alignment holes at the shifter. Remove lockpin H .
  16.  
  17. Install the console, shifter boot and retainer and connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  
  19. Road test the vehicle to check for good gate feel during shifting. Fine tune the adjustment as necessary.
