Relieving Fuel System Pressure

CAUTION
To reduce the risk of fire or personal injury, it is necessary to relieve the fuel system pressure before servicing the fuel system.

1.8L AND 2.0L OHC ENGINES



1983-84 Vehicles
  1. Remove the fuel pump fuse from the fuse block.
  2.  
  3. Crank the engine. The engine will run until it runs out of fuel. Crank the engine again for 3 seconds making sure it is out of fuel.
  4.  
  5. Turn the ignition OFF and replace the fuse.
  6.  

1985-90 Vehicles
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the fuel filler cap.
  4.  
  5. Connect gauge J-34730-1 or equivalent, to the fuel pressure connection. Wrap a cloth around the fitting to absorb any fuel leakage.
  6.  
  7. Install the bleed hose into an approved container and open the valve to bleed system pressure.
  8.  

1992 2.0L (VIN H) ENGINES



  1. Remove the fuel pump fuse from the fuse block.
  2.  
  3. Crank the engine. The engine will run until it runs out of fuel. Crank the engine again for 3 seconds making sure it is out of fuel.
  4.  
  5. Turn the ignition OFF and replace the fuse.
  6.  

2.8L AND 3.1L ENGINES



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the fuel filler cap to relieve tank pressure.
  4.  
  5. Connect gauge J-34730-1, or equivalent, to the fuel pressure connection. Wrap a cloth around the fitting to absorb any fuel leakage.
  6.  
  7. Install the bleed hose into an approved container and open the valve to bleed system pressure.
  8.  
  9. Drain any fuel still in the gauge into an approved container.
