REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Front Cable
  1. For vehicles through 1988, block the drive wheels and place the gear selector in Neutral .
  2.  
  3. Remove the center console as detailed in Routine Maintenance 0 .
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the lever.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cable retaining nut and the bracket securing the front cable to the floor panel.
  8.  
  9. Raise the car and loosen the equalizer/adjustment nut.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the catalytic converter shield, then remove the parking brake cable from the body.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the cable from the equalizer, then remove the cable from the guide and the underbody clips.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Position the cable to the equalizer, guide and underbody clips.
  2.

  1. Install the parking brake cable to the body and tighten the catalytic converter shield.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the equalizer nut.
  4.  
  5. Install the cable retaining nut and the bracket securing the front cable to the floor panel.
  6.  
  7. Connect the parking brake cable to the lever.
  8.  
  9. Install the center console as detailed in Chassis Electrical .
  10.  
  11. Adjust the parking brake cable, as outlined in this section.
  12.  

Right and Left Rear Cables
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Back off the equalizer/adjustment nut (must be separated from the threaded rod if removing the right cable) until the cable tension is eliminated.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tires, wheels and brake drums.
  6.  
  7. Insert a a suitable prytool between the brake shoe and the top part of the brake adjuster bracket. Push the bracket to the front and then release the top brake adjuster rod.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear hold-down spring. Remove the actuator lever and the lever return spring.
  10.  
  11. Remove the adjuster screw spring.
  12.  
  13. Remove the top rear brake shoe return spring.
  14.  
  15. Unhook the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever.
  16.  
  17. Depress the conduit fitting retaining tangs and then remove the conduit fitting from the backing plate.
  18.  
  19. Remove the cable end button from the connector.
  20.  
  21. Depress the conduit fitting retaining tangs and remove the conduit fitting from the axle bracket.
  22.  

To install:
  1. Install the conduit fitting to the axle bracket.
  2.  
  3. Install the cable end button to the connector (left side only).
  4.  
  5. Install the conduit fitting to the backing plate.
  6.  
  7. Hook the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever.
  8.  
  9. Install the top rear brake shoe return spring.
  10.  
  11. Install the adjuster screw spring.
  12.  
  13. Install the rear hold-down spring. Install the actuator lever and the lever return spring.
  14.  
  15. Install the top brake adjuster rod.
  16.  
  17. Install the tires, wheels and brake drums.
  18.  
  19. Adjust the parking brake cable, as outlined in this section.
  20.  

ADJUSTMENT



See Figure 3

  1. Adjust the rear brakes, as outlined in this section.
  2.  
  3. Slowly pull the parking brake lever upward until 5 rachet clicks are heard.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  

To prevent damage to the threaded parking brake adjusting rod when servicing the parking brake, clean and lubricate the exposed threaded on each side of the nut.

  1. Tighten the adjusting nut until the left rear wheel can just be turned backward using two hands, but is locked in forward rotation.
  2.

  1. Release the parking brake.
  2.  
  3. Rotate the rear wheels, they should turn freely in either direction with no drag.
  4.  
  5. Carefully lower the vehicle.
