Turn Signal (Combination) Switch

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1982-90 Vehicles

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel and the trim cover.
  4.  
  5. Pry the cover from the steering column.
  6.  
  7. Position a U-shaped lockplate compressing tool on the end of the steering shaft and compress the lock plate by turning the shaft nut clockwise. Pry the wire snapring out of the shaft groove.

  1. Remove the tool and lift the lockplate off the shaft.
  2.  
  3. Slip the cancelling cam, upper bearing preload spring, and thrust washer off the shaft.

  1. Remove the turn signal lever. Remove the hazard flasher button retaining screw and remove the button, spring and knob.
  2.  
  3. Pull the switch connector out of the mast jacket and tape the upper part to facilitate switch removal. Attach a long piece of wire to the turn signal switch connector. When installing the turn signal switch, feed this wire through the column first, and then use this wire to pull the switch connector into position. On tilt wheels, place the turn signal and shifter housing in low position and remove the harness cover.

  5. Unfasten the three switch mounting screws. Remove the switch by pulling it straight up while guiding the wiring harness cover through the column.

To install:
  1. Install the replacement switch by working the connector and cover down through the housing and under the bracket. On tilt models, the connector is worked down through the housing, under the bracket, and then the cover is installed on the harness.
  2.  
  3. Install the switch mounting screws and the connector on the mast jacket bracket. Install the column-to-dash trim plate.
  4.  
  5. Install the flasher knob and the turn signal lever.
  6.  
  7. With the turn signal lever in neutral and the flasher knob out, slide the thrust washer, upper bearing preload spring, and cancelling cam onto the shaft.
  8.  
  9. Position the lock plate on the shaft and press it down until a new snapring can be inserted in the shaft groove. Always use a new snapring when assembling.
  10.  
  11. Install the cover and the steering wheel.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  

1991-94 Sunbird

See Figure 4

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the pad and horn lead, retainer and nut and remove the steering wheel from the column, using a suitable puller.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the 2 lower column cover retaining screws.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 3 bottom retaining screws from lower column cover.
  8.  
  9. Separate the rose bud fastener (integral to wire harness) from the jacket assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the turn signal switch retaining screws.
  12.  
  13. Compress the locking tab and remove the 2 wire harness connector from the switch.
  14.  
  15. Depress the locking tab and remove the cruise connector from the wire harness, if so equipped.
  16.

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the cover and switch retaining screws to 49 inch lbs. (5.5 Nm) and the steering wheel retaining nut to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  

1991-94 Cavalier

This procedure covers removal and installation of the headlamp, headlamp dimmer switch, turn signal and hazard switches, as well as the cruise control switch.

  1. If equipped, disable the SIR system. For details, please refer to the procedure located in Chassis Electrical of this repair guide.

  1. If not already done, disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Unfasten the horn pad, then remove the steering wheel. For details, please refer to the procedure earlier in this section.
  4.  

If necessary, using locking pliers with a piece of rubber (such as a spark plug boot) between the jaws to help prevent damage to the tilt lever during removal.

  1. If equipped, remove the tilt lever from the steering column by grasping the lever firmly and twisting counterclockwise, while pulling it from the column.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers.
  4.  
  5. Remove the dampener assembly, then unfasten and remove the switch assembly from the vehicle.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Position and secure the switch assembly.
  2.  
  3. Install the dampener and the upper and lower steering column covers.
  4.  
  5. If equipped, attach the tilt lever to the column.
  6.  
  7. Install the steering wheel, then fasten the horn pad.
  8.  
  9. If equipped, enable the SIR system, as outlined in Chassis Electrical of this repair guide.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.
