TESTING

2.2L (VIN 4) Engine
  1. Remove the ignition coil(s).
  2.
  3. Using an ohmmeter, check the resistance between the primary terminals on the underside of the coil. The resistance should be 0.50-0.90 ohms.
  4.
  5. Check the resistance between the secondary terminals. It should be 5000-10,000 ohms.
  6.
  7. If the coil failed either test, replace the coil.
  8.

2.3L (VIN D) and 2.4L (VIN T) Engines
  1. Remove the ignition coil(s).
  2.
  3. Using an ohmmeter, check the resistance between the secondary terminals. Resistance should be 10,000 ohms.
  4.
  5. If the coil secondary resistance is out of specification, replace the coil.
  6.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

2.2L (VIN 4) Engine

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Detach the coil assembly electrical connectors.
  6.
  7. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires.
  8.

To install:
  1. Position the ignition coil assembly to the engine. Install the mounting bolts, then tighten to 15-22 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm).
  2.
  3. Connect the spark plug wires to the proper coils, as tagged during removal.
  4.
  5. Attach the coil electrical connectors.
  6.
  7. Carefully lower the vehicle, then connect the negative battery cable.
  8.

2.3L (VIN D) and 2.4L (VIN T) Engines

See Figure 4

On these vehicles, the ignition coils and electronic ignition control module are one assembly.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Detach the electronic Ignition Control Module (ICM) 11-pin harness connector.
  4.
  5. Unfasten the four ignition coil and ICM assembly-to-camshaft housing bolts, then remove the assembly from the vehicle.
  6.

If the boots stick to the spark plugs, use tool J 36011 or equivalent, to removed by first twisting, then carefully pulling upward on the retainers. Reinstall the boots and retainers on the ignition coil housing secondary terminals. The boots and retainers must be in place on the ignition coil housing prior to installation or damage to the ignition system could result.

To install:
  1. Fasten the spark plugs and retainers to the housing.
  2.
  3. While carefully aligning the boots to the spark plug terminals, position the ignition coil and ICM assembly to the engine.
  4.
  5. Coat the threads of the retaining bolts with a suitable thread sealant. Install the retaining bolts, then tighten to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  6.
  7. Attach the electronic ICM harness connector.
  8.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
