Brake Backing Plate

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



See Figure 1

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the rear wheel(s).
  2.  
  3. Remove the drum, rear brake shoes and wheel cylinders as described earlier in this section.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the backing plate.
  6.  
  7. If not removed already, unfasten the retaining bolts, then remove the hub and bearing assembly. For details, please refer to the procedure in Suspension & Steering of this guide.
  8.  
  9. Remove the backing plate from the vehicle.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install the backing plate to the axle assembly.
  2.  
  3. Position the wheel cylinder to the backing plate and secure with the retainers.
  4.

  1. Install the hub and bearing, then secure using the assembly bolts.
  2.  
  3. Connect the parking brake cable to the backing plate.
  4.  
  5. Uncap and attach the inlet tube and nut to the wheel cylinder. Tight to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the drum and rear brake shoes. Check the brake adjustment.
  8.  
  9. Bleed the brake system.
  10.  
  11. Install the rear wheel(s).
  12.  
  13. Carefully lower the vehicle, then tighten the lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Adjust the parking brake.
  16.
