REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



2.2L Engine

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. As outlined earlier, remove the engine oil pan.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the pump to rear bearing cap bolt and remove the pump and extension shaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove the extension shaft and retainer.
  8.

To install:
  1. Heat the retainer in hot water prior to assembling the extension shaft.
  2.  
  3. Install the extension to the oil pump, being careful not to crack the retainer.
  4.  
  5. Fasten pump to rear bearing cap bolt and torque is 26-38 ft. lbs. (35-51 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the oil pan.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

2.3L and 2.4L Engines

See Figure 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the oil pan.
  4.  
  5. Remove the balance shaft chain cover and chain guide (tensioner).
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the oil pump bolts, then remove the pump cover.
  8.  
  9. Pull the housing to disconnect the gear from the balance shaft. Remove the oil pump housing assembly from the balance shaft assembly.

To install:
  1. Position the oil pump and cover to the balance shaft housing. Tighten the pump-to-block bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the balance shaft chain tensioner. Tighten the bolt to 115 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the balance shaft chain cover. Tighten the bolt to 115 inch lbs. (13 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the oil pan.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.
