A helpful way of helping to avoid damaging the painted surfaces is to attach tape (BUT NOT DUCT TAPE) to the edges and corners of the panels and the hood assembly before removal.

  1. Raise the hood and install protective coverings over the fender areas to prevent damage to the painted surfaces.
  2.
  3. On the Sunfire only, remove the headlamp seal screw and remove the headlamp seal.
  4.
  5. Matchmark the position of the hinge on the hood to aid alignment during installation.
  6.
  7. Have an assistant support the front of the hood, remove the hinge-to-hood screws/bolts on each side of the hood, then grasp the rear of the hood and remove it from the vehicle.
  8.

To install:
  1. Position the hood, using the alignment marks made when removed.
  2.
  3. Install the hood-to-hinge bolts snug, but do not fully tighten.
  4.
  5. Inspect for proper hood alignment and adjust by moving the hood into position.
  6.
  7. Tighten the hinge bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  8.
  9. On the Sunfire only, install the headlamp seal and tighten the retaining screw.
  10.
  11. Remove the protective covering from the fenders.
  12.

ALIGNMENT

To raise or lower the rear of the hood to achieve alignment with the rear of the fenders, proceed as follows:

  1. Open and support the hood.
  2.
  3. Adjust the front of the hood by:
    1. Remove the bolts for the hood latch.
    2.
    3. Adjust the front hood bumpers by:

Turning clockwise to lower the bumper

Turning counterclockwise to raise the bumper

    4.
    5. Tighten the hood latch bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
    6.

  4.
  5. Adjust the rear of the hood by:
    1. Measuring the difference in height between the hood and the fender.
    2.
    3. Remove the hood hinge bolts and place a shim of the measured distance under the hinge and around the bolt hole.
    4.
    5. Hand tighten the hinge bolts and verify the height is correct.
    6.
    7. Tighten the hinge bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
    8.

  6.
  7. Adjust the side-to-side clearance between the hood and the fenders/bumper (fascia) by:
    1. Loosening, but not removing the hinge bolts.
    2.
    3. Lower the hood assembly and adjust the hood until the clearances on either side is equal and correct.
    4.
    5. Raise the hood and tighten the hinge bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
    6.

  8.
  9. Close the hood.
  10.
