REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Front Cable

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Pull and hold the cable toward the rear of the car to create slack in the cable.
  4.  
  5. Bend the tang on the connector to allow cable removal.
  6.  
  7. Detach the cable from the connector.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the fold over retaining clip, then remove the cable from the equalizer.
  10.  
  11. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the console. For the Sunfire, remove the shifter boot.
  14.  
  15. Move the lever to the off position.
  16.  
  17. Remove the cable conduit end fitting from the handle assembly.
  18.  
  19. Pull the cable until the notch on the ratchet is visible through the cover plate opening.
  20.  
  21. Push the pawl spring downward toward the notch in the ratchet.
  22.  
  23. Release the cable slowly to allow the notch to catch the leg of the spring.
  24.  
  25. Remove the front parking brake cable button from the reel assembly.
  26.  
  27. Remove the left rocker panel/door sill plate.
  28.  
  29. Disconnect the grommet and retainer from the floor pan.
  30.  
  31. Detach the cable from the clip on the #2 bar, under the carpet.
  32.  
  33. Remove the front cable from the vehicle.
  34.  

To install:
  1. Route the cable through the floor pan, from the inside to the outside.
  2.  
  3. Attach the cable conduit fitting to the handle assembly.
  4.  
  5. Fasten the front cable bottom of the reel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Connect the cable to the #2 bar clip under the carpet.
  8.  
  9. Install the console. For the Sunfire, install the shifter boot.
  10.  
  11. Fasten the left rocker panel/door sill plate.
  12.  
  13. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Fasten the fold over bracket to the body.
  16.  
  17. Attach the cable to the equalizer.
  18.  
  19. Fasten the cable to the connector. Bend the tang on the connector to hold the cable.
  20.  
  21. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Adjust the parking brake cable, as outlined in this section.

Right and Left Rear Cables

See Figure 3

  1. Remove the console. For the Sunfire, remove the shifter boot also.
  2.  
  3. Move the parking brake lever to the off position.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the cable conduit fitting from the handle assembly.
  6.  
  7. Pull the cable until the notch on the ratchet is visible through the cover plate opening.
  8.  
  9. Push the pawl spring downward toward the notch in the ratchet, as shown in the accompanying figure.

  1. Release the cable slowly to allow the notch to catch the leg of the spring.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Bend the tang on the connector to allow cable removal.
  6.  
  7. Pull and hold the cable towards the rear of the car to create slack in the cable.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the cable from the equalizer.
  10.  
  11. Remove the tire and wheel assembly, then remove the brake drum.
  12.  
  13. Insert a suitable prytool between the brake shoe and the top part of the brake adjuster bracket, then remove the cable from the bracket.
  14.  
  15. While depressing the conduit fitting retaining tangs, remove the conduit fitting from the backing plate.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Position the conduit fitting into the backing plate.
  2.  
  3. Fasten the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever in the drum assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install the brake drum, then install the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Fasten the conduit fitting retaining tangs, and position the conduit fitting into the axle bracket.
  8.  
  9. Attach the cable to the equalizer.
  10.  
  11. Fasten the cable to the connector, then carefully lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. For the Sunfire install the shifter boot.
  14.  
  15. Install the console.
  16.  
  17. Adjust the parking brake. Check the brake tension. It may be necessary to adjust the rear brake to obtain proper tension.
  18.  

ADJUSTMENT



The parking brake on these vehicles are basically self-adjusting. Fully apply and release the hand parking brake lever 4-6 times to self-adjust.
