REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Front Wheels

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. To remove the wheel, loosen all the lug nuts at least one full turn, before raising the car.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle, then remove the wheel and tire.
  6.  
  7. Unplug the front speed sensor electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Remove the hub and bearing assembly, then disconnect the speed sensor from the hub and bearing using a blunt flat bladed tool.
  10.  

When the speed sensor is removed it must be replaced, the sensor is damaged when being removed and cannot be reused. There are two parts to the speed sensor and they are only replaced as an assembly.

To install:
  1. Inspect the bearing for signs of water intrusion. If water has entered the bearing , the bearing must be replaced.
  2.  
  3. Apply Loctite® 620 to the mating surfaces of the wheel speed sensor where it contacts the hub and bearing assembly.
  4.  
  5. Press the speed sensor onto the hub and bearing assembly with tool J-38764 or equivalent.
  6.

  1. Install the hub and bearing assembly to the vehicle, then connect the speed sensor.
  2.  
  3. Install the wheel and tire. Hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  4.  
  5. Lower the vehicle, then tighten the lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

Rear Wheels

The rear integral wheel bearing and sensor assembly must be replaced as a unit.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. To remove the wheel, loosen all the lug nuts at least one full turn, before raising the car.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear wheels, then remove the brake drums.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolts and nuts attaching the rear wheel bearing and speed sensor. Rotate the axle flange to align the large hole with each of the bolt locations. Remove the bolt while holding the nut.
  10.  

With the rear wheel bearing and speed sensor attaching bolts and nuts removed, the drum brake assembly is supported only by the brake line connection. To avoid bending or damage to the brake line, Install two of the wheel bearing assembly bolts to secure the brake.

  1. Remove the rear wheel bearing and speed sensor assembly.
  2.  
  3. Unplug the rear sensor electrical connection.
  4.  

To install:
  1. Engage the rear speed sensor electrical connector.
  2.  
  3. Secure the bolts and nuts, attaching the rear wheel bearing, speed sensor and drum assembly to the suspension bracket. Rotate the axle flange to align the large hole with each bolt location. Install the bolt while holding the nut. Tighten the bolts to 46 ft. lbs. (63 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the brake drums.
  6.  
  7. Install the rear wheels. Hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle, then tighten the lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.
