REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Procedures for discharging and servicing the air conditioning system are described in Routine Maintenance . If a refrigerant recovery/recycling machine is not available, this job should be performed at a dealer or a shop that has this equipment.

Except 2.2L (VIN 4) and 3.1L (VIN M)

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Properly discharge the air conditioning system into a recovery/recycling machine.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Unplug the electrical connectors from the compressor.
  6.
  7. Remove the coupled hose assembly from the rear of the compressor. Discard the O-rings.
  8.

Cap the refrigerant lines when opening the system to prevent the entry of dirt and moisture and the loss of refrigerant lubricant.

  1. Release the drive belt tension and remove the belt from the compressor.
  2.
  3. Remove the compressor attaching bolts.
  4.
  5. Remove the compressor.

  1. Drain and measure the refrigerant oil from the compressor. Discard the old oil.
  2.

To install:
  1. If the compressor is to be replaced, drain the oil from the new compressor and discard. Add new refrigerant oil equivalent to the amount that was drained from the compressor upon removal.
  2.
  3. Position the compressor in the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Install the compressor attaching bolts.
  6.
  7. Install new O-rings to the coupled hose assembly. Lubricate the O-rings with refrigerant oil.
  8.
  9. Install the coupled hose assembly to the back of the compressor.
  10.
  11. Install the drive belt.
  12.
  13. Engage the electrical connectors to the compressor.
  14.
  15. Connect negative battery cable.
  16.
  17. Evacuate, recharge and leak test the system.
  18.

2.2L (VIN 4) Engine

See Figure 3

  1. Properly discharge the air conditioning system into a recovery/recycling machine.
  2.
  3. Remove the drive belt on the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Remove the air cleaner and resonator assembly.
  6.
  7. Unplug the electrical connections from the compressor.
  8.
  9. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  10.
  11. Unfasten, then remove and cap the A/C hose from the compressor.
  12.

Cap the refrigerant lines when opening the system to prevent the entry of dirt and moisture and the loss of refrigerant lubricant.

  1. Loosen the A/C compressor bolts, then raise and support the vehicle.
  2.
