Condenser

Print

The condenser assembly is located in front of the radiator. It is made up of many tubes which carry the refrigerant, and cooling fins which provides a rapid transfer of heat. The air passing through the condenser cools the refrigerant vapors which causes it to condense to a high pressure liquid.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Procedures for discharging and servicing the air conditioning system is described in Routine Maintenance . If a refrigerant recovery/recycling machine is not available, this job should be performed at a dealer or a shop that has the equipment.

1982-93 Models
  1. Properly discharge the air conditioning system into a recovery/recycling machine.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the and cap the high-pressure and liquid lines at the condenser fittings. Discard the O-rings.
  6.

Use a backup wrench on the condenser fittings when removing the high-pressure and liquid lines. Cap both refrigerant lines when opening the system to prevent the entry of dirt and moisture and the loss of refrigerant lubricant.

  1. Remove the condenser attaching bolts from the center support.
  2.
  3. Remove the engine strut bracket and upper radiator support. Lean the radiator back.
  4.
  5. Remove the condenser.
  6.

To install:
  1. Position the condenser in the vehicle.

If replacing the condenser or if the original condenser was flushed during service, add 1 fluid oz. (30ml) of refrigerant oil to the system.

  1. Install the upper radiator support and engine strut bracket.
  2.
  3. Install the condenser attaching bolts.
  4.
  5. Replace the condenser fitting O-rings. Lubricate the O-rings with refrigerant oil. Tighten until snug.
  6.
  7. Connect the condenser high-pressure and liquid lines.
  8.

Use a backup wrench on the condenser fittings when tightening lines.

  1. Connect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Evacuate, charge and leak test the system.
  4.
