Fluid Pan

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



  1. Raise and support the vehicle on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Place a drain pan under the transaxle bottom pan.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the pan bolts and drain the fluid.
  6.  
  7. Lightly tap the pan with a rubber mallet or pry the pan off loose with a suitable tool. This will remove the pan and the filter.
  8.  
  9. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces. The case and gasket surfaces should be cleaned with solvent and air dried. Some of the old gasket may adhere to the pan or the case itself, be sure to clean the areas well.
  10.  
  11. Inspect the pan for any metal particles, clutch facing materials, rubber particles, and engine coolant. If found determine the source of contamination, and fix the problem.
  12.  
  13. Check the pan for any distortion.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Always use a new gasket and filter. On the 3T40 coat the seal with a small amount of TRANSJEL J-36850, then reverse the removal procedures.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the pan bolts to the appropriate torque as follows:

    3T40 transaxle: 98 inch lbs. (11 Nm)
     
    4T60-E transaxle: 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm)
     
    other transaxles: 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm)

  5. Lower the vehicle, and fill the transaxle with the proper and amount of fluid. Always use DEXRON III fluid.
  6.  
  7. Place the selector gear in park, start the engine, and run at as slow idle.
  8.  
  9. Inspect the fluid level, correct if needed, do not overfill. Check for leaks.
  10.  

FILTER SERVICE



  1. Raise and support the vehicle on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Place a drain pan under the transaxle bottom pan.

  5. Loosen the pan bolts and drain the fluid.

  7. Lightly tap the pan with a rubber mallet or pry the pan off loose with a suitable tool. This will remove the pan and the filter.

  9. On the 125C, 440-T4 and 3T40 transaxles, remove the oil filter and seal. The seal may be stuck to the case.
  10.  
  11. On the 4T60-E model, remove the screen/filter. The lip ring seal is pressed into the case and should be removed only if replacement is necessary.
  12.  
  13. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces. The case and gasket surfaces should be cleaned with solvent and air dried. Some of the old gasket may adhere to the pan or the case itself, be sure to clean the areas well.

  3. On most transaxles tighten the pan bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm) on 3T40, 98 inch lbs. (11 Nm) and the 4T60-E, 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Lower the vehicle, and fill the transaxle with the proper and amount of fluid. Always use DEXRON III fluid.
  6.  
  7. Place the selector gear in park, start the engine, and run at as slow idle.

  9. Inspect the fluid level, correct if needed, do not overfill. Check for leaks.
