Neutral Safety/Back-Up Light Switch

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Shifter Mounted
  1. Apply the parking brake and block the wheels.
  2.  
  3. Place the vehicle in the neutral position.
  4.  
  5. Remove the shifter knob from the shifter by removing the retaining screw at the back of the knob.
  6.  
  7. Remove the screws at the sides and front of the console.
  8.  
  9. Open the console box and remove the retaining screw inside the box.
  10.  
  11. Remove the ashtray at the rear of the console and remove the retaining screw behind the ashtray.
  12.  
  13. Slide the console rearward slightly, then lift it over the shifter.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the wiring harness at the back-up light switch.
  16.  
  17. Remove the switch from the base of the shifter.
  18.  
  19. Reverse to install the switch.
  20.  
  21. Adjust if needed, unblock the wheels.
  22.  

Transaxle Mounted

See Figure 1

  1. Apply the parking brake and block the wheels.
  2.  
  3. Place the vehicle in the neutral position.
  4.  
  5. Remove the shifter linkage.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the electrical harness to the switch.
  8.

  1. Unfasten the switch, then lower from the vehicle.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Place the shift shaft in Neutral.
  2.  
  3. Align the flats of the shift shaft to flats in the switch.
  4.  
  5. Install the switch assembly.
  6.  

If the bolt holes do not align with the mounting boss on the transaxle, verify the sift shaft DO NOT ROTATE THE SWITCH. The switch is pinned in the neutral position. If the switch has been rotated and the pin broken or when using an old switch, adjust it.

  1. Tighten the switch screw to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Remove the gauge pin.
  4.  
  5. Attach the electrical connection, then connect the shifter linkage.
  6.  

ADJUSTMENT



  1. Place the transaxle control shifter in the neutral notch on the detent plate.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the switch attaching screws.
  4.  
  5. Rotate the switch on the shifter assembly to align the service adjustment hole with the carrier tang hole.
  6.  
  7. Insert a 3 / 32 in. (2.34mm) maximum diameter gauge pin to a depth of 5 / 8 in. (15mm).
  8.  
  9. Tighten the attaching screws.
  10.  
  11. Remove the gauge pin.
  12.
