IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE



This procedure allows the ICM memory to be updated with the correct IAC valve pintle position. The Idle Learn procedure must be performed on the 3.1L engine as follows:

  1. Place the transaxle in P or N .
  2.  
  3. Install the Tech 1 scan tool or equivalent.
  4.  
  5. Turn the ignition switch ON , engine OFF.
  6.  
  7. Select IAC system, then Idle Learn in the MISC Test mode.
  8.  
  9. Proceed with the Idle Learn as directed by the scan tool.
  10.  

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



DIS Assembly
2.2L, 2.5L, 2.8L, 3.1L AND 3.8L ENGINES

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Unplug the DIS electrical connectors.
  4.  
  5. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires.
  6.  
  7. Remove the DIS assembly attaching bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the DIS assembly from the engine.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install the DIS assembly and attaching bolts.
  2.  
  3. Connect the spark plug wires.
  4.

  1. Engage the DIS electrical connectors.
  2.  
  3. Connect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. On 3.1L (VIN-T) engine, perform the idle learn procedure.
  6.  
  7. Reset the clock, radio and any other accessories if required.
  8.  

Ignition Coils
2.2L ENGINE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise the car and support with jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the ICM electrical connectors.
  6.  
  7. Mark and disconnect the spark plug wires.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 3 coil assembly-to-block bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the coil assembly from the engine.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Install the coil assembly to the engine with the mounting bolts.
  2.  
  3. Connect the 3 ignition coil assembly-to-the block bolts.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the coil assembly mounting bolts to 15-22 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the plug wires to the proper coils.
  8.  
  9. Install the ICM connectors.
  10.  
  11. Lower the car, connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Reset the clock, radio and any other accessories if required.
  14.  

2.5L, 2.8L, 3.1L AND 3.8L ENGINES
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect and tag spark plug wires.
  4.  
  5. Remove ignition coil attaching bolts, then the ignition coil from the module.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Install the coil(s) and attaching bolts, tighten to 40 inch lbs. (4-5 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the spark plug wires.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. On 3.1L engine perform the idle learn procedure.
  8.  
  9. Reset the clock, radio and any other accessories if required.
  10.  

3.3L ENGINE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Tag and disconnect spark plug wires.
  4.  
  5. Remove ignition coil(s) attaching bolts, then the ignition coil from the module.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Install the coil(s) and attaching bolts, torque to 27 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the spark plug wires.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Reset the clock, radio and any other accessories if required.
  8.  

Ignition Module
2.2L ENGINE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the car.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ignition coil assembly from the engine. Disconnect the coils from the assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the module from the assembly plate.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Install the new module to the plate.
  2.  
  3. Install the coils to the assembly, and install the coil assembly on the engine.
  4.  
  5. Lower the car. Connect the negative battery cable, then reset the clock, radio and any other accessories.
  6.  

2.5L, 2.8L, 3.1L (VIN T) AND 3.8L ENGINES
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the DIS assembly from the engine.
  4.  
  5. Remove the coils from the assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove DIS module from the assembly plate.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Install the DIS module to the assembly plate.
  2.  
  3. Install the coils to the assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install the DIS assembly to the engine.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable, then reset the clock, radio and any other accessories.
  8.  
  9. On 3.1L engine perform the idle learn procedure.
  10.  

3.1L (VIN M) ENGINE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the 6-way, 3-way and 2-way connectors at the ignition control module.
  4.  
  5. Remove the plug wires from the coil assembly.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the 6 screws that secure the coil assemblies to the ICM.
  8.  
  9. Remove the nuts and washers securing the ICM assembly to the bracket and remove the ICM.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install the coils to the ICM installing the 6 screws.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the screws to 40 inch lbs. (4-5 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the nuts and washers securing the assembly to the bracket and torque them to 70 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Engage the 2, 3, and 6 way connectors to the ICM.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable, then reset the clock, radio and any other accessories.
  10.  

Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP)
2.2L ENGINE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise the car and support.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the harness at the sensor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolt to the sensor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the sensor from the engine.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Inspect the O-ring and replace if needed. Lubricate the O-ring with engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the sensor to the block.
  4.  
  5. Insert the bolt and tighten to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Engage the harness on the sensor.
  8.  
  9. Lower the car, Connect the negative battery cable, then reset the clock, radio and any other accessories.
  10.  

2.5L, 2.8L, 3.1L (VIN T) AND 3.8L ENGINES
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect crankshaft sensor electrical connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the crankshaft sensor attaching bolt, then remove the crankshaft sensor from the vehicle.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Inspect the sensor O-ring for wear, cracks or leakage. Replace as necessary. Lubricate the new O-ring with engine oil prior to installation.
  2.  
  3. Install the sensor into the hole in the engine block and install retaining bolt.
  4.  
  5. Engage the electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable, then reset the clock, radio and any other accessories.
  8.  
  9. On 3.1L engine perform the idle learn procedure.
  10.  

3.1L (VIN-M) ENGINE WITH 3X CKP

See Figure 3

On cars equipped with manual transaxles, the CKP is easily accessed from beneath the engine. For automatic transaxles, the rack and pinion heat shield and the converter intermediate exhaust assembly must be removed.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Unplug the sensor connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the sensor bolts and the sensor from the engine.
  6.

  1. Inspect the O-ring and replace if needed. This is always advisable anyway.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Install the sensor to the engine, tighten the mounting bolt to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Insert the connector to the sensor, then connect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Reset the clock, radio and any other accessories.
  6.  

3.1L (VIN-M) ENGINE WITH 24X CKP

See Figures 4 and 5

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the serpentine belt from the crankshaft pulley.
  4.

  1. Raise the car on a hoist.
  2.  
  3. Remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt. Use tool J-38197 or equivalent.
  4.

  1. Unplug the crankshaft sensor connector.
  2.  
  3. Remove the 2 sensor mounting bolts, remove the sensor.
  4.  

To install:
  1. Connect the sensor with the 2 mounting bolts. Torque the bolts to 8 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Reattach the sensor connector.
  4.  
  5. Install the balancer on the crankshaft.
  6.  
  7. Apply thread sealer GM# 1052080 or equivalent to the threads of the balancer bolt. Tighten the bolt to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Lower the car.
  10.  
  11. Install the serpentine belt.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable, then reset the clock, radio and any other accessories.
  14.  

Camshaft Position Sensor
3.1L ENGINE (VIN M)

See Figures 6, 7 and 8

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the serpentine belt.
  4.  
  5. Remove the power steering pump.
  6.  
  7. Unplug the connector to the sensor.
  8.

  1. Remove the mounting bolt for the sensor, and remove the sensor.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Install the camshaft sensor.
  2.  
  3. Insert the bolt, tighten down to 8 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Insert the electrical connector to the sensor.
  6.  
  7. Install the power steering pump, and the serpentine belt.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable, then reset the clock, radio and any other accessories.
  10.
