REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Integral Coil

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the feed and module wire terminal connectors from the distributor cap.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ignition set retainer.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 4 coil cover-to-distributor cap screws.
  8.  
  9. Using a blunt drift, press the coil wire spade terminals out of the distributor cap.
  10.  
  11. Lift the coil out of the distributor cap.
  12.  
  13. Remove and clean the coil spring, rubber seal washer and coil cavity of the distributor cap.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Coat the rubber seal with a dielectric lubricant furnished. This is usually in the replacement ignition coil package.
  2.

  1. Install the coil spring, rubber seal washer and coil cavity into the distributor cap.
  2.  
  3. Place the coil into the cap, connect the spade terminals.
  4.  
  5. Install the 4 cover-to distributor cap screws, install the ignition set retainer.
  6.  
  7. Connect the feed and module wire terminal connectors to the distributor cap.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Reset the clock, radio and any other accessories if required.
  12.  

External Coil

See Figures 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the bolts securing the coil assembly.
  4.

  1. Remove the wires attached to the mounting screw.

  1. Disconnect the wire harnesses connected to the coil assembly
  2.

  1. Disconnect the coil wire from the coil.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Place the new coil in position, attach the mounting wires to the mounting bolts and tighten.
  2.  
  3. Install the wiring harnesses to the coil, and connect the coil wire.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Reset the clock, radio and any other accessories if required.
  8.

Distributor Cap
INTEGRAL COIL
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remember to number the cap and wires before removal.
  4.  
  5. Remove the feed and module wire terminal connectors from the distributor cap.
  6.  
  7. Remove the retainer and spark plug wires from the cap.
  8.  
  9. Depress and release the 4 distributor cap-to-housing retainers and lift off the cap assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 4 coil cover screws and cover.
  12.  
  13. Using a finger or a blunt drift, push the spade terminals out of the distributor cap.
  14.  
  15. Remove all 4 coil screws and lift the coil, coil spring and rubber seal washer out of the cap coil cavity.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Position the new cap on the distributor. Clean and lubricate the rubber seal washer with dielectric lubricant.
  2.  
  3. Install the coil spring, rubber seal washer and coil cavity into the distributor cap.
  4.  
  5. Position the coil into the cap, connect the spade terminals.
  6.  
  7. Install the 4 cover-to distributor cap screws, install the ignition set retainer.
  8.  
  9. Connect the feed and module wire terminal connectors to the distributor cap.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Reset the clock, radio and any other accessories if required.
  14.  

EXTERNAL COIL

See Figures 9 and 10

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remember to number the cap and wires before removal. It might be a good idea to match the caps up and insert the wires into the new cap prior to installation. This could aid you in replacing the wires on the correct terminals.

  1. Remove the spark plug wires from the cap.
  2.  
  3. Remove the 2 cap screws and lift the cap off.
  4.

To install:
  1. Install the new distributor cap using the cap screws and tighten until snug.
  2.  
  3. Replace the wires to the proper terminals.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Reset the clock, radio and any other accessories if required.
  8.  

Rotor

See Figures 11 and 12

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the distributor cap.
  4.

  1. Remove the two rotor attaching screws and rotor.
  2.

To install:
  1. Insert the new rotor in place and tighten the mounting screws until snug.
  2.  
  3. Install the distributor cap.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Reset the clock, radio and any other accessories if required.
  8.  

Ignition Module

See Figures 13, 14 and 15

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.

  1. Remove the distributor cap and rotor as previously described.
  2.  
  3. Unplug the harness connector and pick-up coil spade connectors from the module. Be careful not to damage the wires when removing the connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the two screws and module from the distributor housing.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Coat the bottom of the new module with dielectric lubricant. This is usually supplied with the new module.
  2.

  1. Install the module and tighten the screws until snug.
  2.  
  3. Engage the harness connector and pick-up coil spade connectors to the module.
  4.  
  5. Install the cap and rotor.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Reset the clock, radio and any other accessories if required.
  10.
