REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Diesel Engines
1982 MODELS
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable(s).
  2.  
  3. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it safely with jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower starter shield nut and flex the starter shield for access during removal.
  6.  
  7. Tag, then disconnect the wires from the starter.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front starter attaching bolt.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the rear starter attaching bolt and remove the starter assembly, leaving the rear bolt in the starter housing.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Position and install then new starter assembly into the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Insert the starter bolts, tighten to specification.
  4.  
  5. Attach the starter wires in the proper locations.
  6.  
  7. Reinstall the lower starter shield, tighten the nut.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle, connect the negative battery cable, then reset the radio and clock.
  10.  

1983-85 MODELS
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable(s) from the battery(s).
  2.  
  3. Install tool J-28467 to the engine, then raise the vehicle on a hoist.
  4.  
  5. Remove the left and the center engine mounting stud nuts.
  6.  
  7. Move the intermediate shaft seal upwards, then remove the intermediate shaft-to-stud shaft pinch bolt and disconnect the shaft from the gear.
  8.  


CAUTION
It is necessary to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stud shaft; otherwise, damage to the steering gear and/or the intermediate shaft can occur, which may result in the loss of steering control.

  1. Remove the 2 front cradle mounting bolts, then lower the cradle at the front to gain access to the flywheel cover bolts.
  2.  
  3. Remove the flywheel cover bolts and the cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the starter shield nut from the starter and the flex shield.
  6.  
  7. Tag and disconnect the wires from the starter. Remove the starter mounting bolts and the starter.
  8.  
  9. To install, reverse the removal procedures. Tighten the stub shaft pinch bolt to 45 ft. lbs. (62 Nm) and the starter-to-engine bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).

1982-85 Gasoline Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it safely with jackstands.
  4.  
  5. From underneath the vehicle, remove the two starter motor-to-engine bolts and carefully lower the starter. Note the location of shims (if so equipped). On the four cylinder engine, remove the nut that holds the starter bracket to the rear of the starter.
  6.  
  7. Mark and disconnect all wiring at the starter.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Position and install then new starter assembly into the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Insert the starter bolts, tighten to specification.
  4.  
  5. Attach the starter wires in the proper locations.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle, connect the negative battery cable, then reset the radio and clock.
  8.  

1986-96 Models
2.2L ENGINE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine torque strut brace.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Loosen and remove the bolts for the inspection cover, then the cover itself.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolt from the bracket, then the bolts from the starter motor.
  10.  
  11. If used remove the shims from the starter as you lower the starter from the vehicle, then disconnect the starter wiring.
  12.  
  13. Remove the starter bracket.
  14.  

To install:

Before you install the starter to the vehicle, be sure the solenoid battery terminal is secure. Tighten the nut next to the cap on the solenoid battery terminal. If it is not tight in the solenoid cap, the cap may be damaged during installation of the electrical connection and cause the starter to fail later.

  1. Connect the wiring and nuts to the solenoid battery terminal and the solenoid S terminal. Tighten the nuts on the solenoid battery terminal to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Then tighten the nut on the S terminal to 22 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Attach the bracket to the starter, tighten the nuts to 76 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the shims (if used).
  6.  
  7. Position the starter on the engine, then tighten the two starter mounting bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the starter bracket to engine bolt, tighten to 26 ft. lbs. (32 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the flywheel cover and tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle, then install the engine torque strut brace.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable, tighten the cable bolt to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  16.  

2.5L AND 2.8L ENGINES

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the solenoid wires and battery cable from the starter.
  6.

  1. Remove the bolt from the engine cross brace.
  2.  
  3. Place a prybar tool between the upper engine mount and engine to pry rearward. Support the engine.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 4 bolts holding the dust covers. Remove the dust covers.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 2 bolts attaching the starter.
  8.

  1. On the 2.5L engine, remove the bolt attaching the starter bracket to the engine.
  2.  
  3. Remove the starter and any shims.

To install:

If replacing the starter, transfer the starter bracket to the new starter.

  1. Install the starter and any applicable shims.
  2.  
  3. Install the 2 starter attaching bolts.
  4.  
  5. On the 2.5L engine, install the bolt attaching the starter bracket to the engine.
  6.  
  7. Install the dust cover and 4 attaching bolts.
  8.  
  9. Connect the battery cable and solenoid wires.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Roll the engine forward and install the engine brace bolts.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  

3.1L ENGINE (VIN T)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. If equipped, remove the nut from the brace at the air conditioning compressor.
  6.  
  7. If equipped, remove the nuts from the starter-to-engine brace.
  8.  
  9. Remove the drain pan under the engine oil pan.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the oil pressure sending unit electrical connector. Remove the oil pressure sending unit.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oil filter.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bolts from the flywheel inspection cover. Remove the inspection cover.
  16.  
  17. Remove the bolts from the starter motor.
  18.  
  19. Remove the starter motor and any shims.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the starter motor electrical connectors.
  22.  

To install:
  1. Connect the starter motor electrical connectors.
  2.  
  3. Install the starter motor and any shims.
  4.  
  5. Install the starter motor attaching bolts. Tighten to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the flywheel inspection cover and attaching bolts.
  8.  
  9. Install the oil filter.
  10.  
  11. Attach the oil pressure sending unit. Connect the electrical wire.
  12.  
  13. Bolt on the drain pan.
  14.  
  15. Install the nuts to the starter-to-engine brace.
  16.  
  17. Install the nut to brace at the air conditioner compressor.
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
  22.  
  23. Check the engine oil level, add as required.
  24.  

3.1L ENGINE (VIN M)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the starter mounting bolts and lower the starter until the solenoid wiring is accessible.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the electrical leads.
  8.  
  9. Remove the starter.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install the starter.
  2.  
  3. Connect the electrical leads to the starter.
  4.  
  5. Install the starter mounting bolts and tighten to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

3.3L ENGINE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Properly discharge the air conditioning system into a recycling recovery machine. Refer to Routine Maintenance .
  4.  
  5. Remove the cooling fan assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front exhaust manifold.
  8.  
  9. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolts from the flywheel inspection cover and remove the cover.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the air conditioner condenser hose from the compressor and position aside. Cap the opening.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the starter motor electrical wiring.
  16.  
  17. Remove the 2 bolts attaching the starter.
  18.  
  19. Remove the starter and any shims.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Install the starter motor and any shims.
  2.  
  3. Install the 2 bolts attaching the starter. Tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the starter motor electrical wiring.
  6.  
  7. Replace the condenser O-ring. Lubricate with refrigerant oil. Connect the air conditioner condenser hose to the compressor.
  8.  
  9. Install the flywheel inspection cover and attaching bolts.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Install the front exhaust manifold.
  14.  
  15. Install the cooling fan assembly.
  16.  
  17. Evacuate, recharge and leak test the air conditioning system.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.
