Crankshaft Damper

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



2.2L Engine
  1. Remove the drive belt from the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the lug nuts on the right front tire.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right front tire and wheel from the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Detach the right engine splash shield.
  10.  
  11. Loosen and remove the crankshaft bolt.
  12.  
  13. Pull the crankshaft balancer hub and balancer off the vehicle. Make sure to use a suitable tool to hold the flywheel from rotating.
  14.  
  15. Remove the balancer using a suitable puller.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Install the balancer hub and balancer, tighten the hub bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the balancer bolt, tighten to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Attach the right engine splash shield.
  6.  
  7. Install the right front tire and wheel assembly, lower the vehicle, then tighten the lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the drive belt.
  10.  

2.5L, 3.3L and 3.8L Engines

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable, and remove the serpentine belt.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the flywheel or torque converter cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right front tire and wheel assembly.
  8.  
  9. Detach the right front engine splash shield.
  10.  
  11. Use a suitable tool on the flywheel to keep engine from rotating and remove the bolt and washer from the damper.
  12.  
  13. Remove the balancer and the key using a suitable puller.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Install the key and balancer.
  2.  
  3. Install the bolt and washer, tighten the bolt to 162 ft. lbs. (220 Nm).

  1. Attach the engine splash shield.
  2.  
  3. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install the flywheel or torque converter cover.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Install the serpentine belt.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

2.8L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable, and remove the serpentine belt.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the flywheel or torque converter cover.
  6.  
  7. Right front tire and wheel assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right front engine splash shield.
  10.  
  11. Remove the AIR pump, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. Use a suitable tool on the flywheel to keep engine from rotating and remove the bolt and washer from the damper.
  14.  
  15. With tool J-29113, or equivalent, installed on the damper, turn the puller screw.
  16.  

The inertia weight section of the damper is assembled to the hub with a rubber sleeve. A proper puller must be used to avoid damaging the damper assembly.

  1. Remove the damper.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Coat the cover seal with clean engine oil before installing the damper using tool J-29113 or equivalent.
  2.  
  3. Apply sealant to the key and keyway.
  4.  
  5. Place the damper into position and pull into place with tool.
  6.  
  7. Install the retaining bolt and tighten to 110 ft. lbs. (149 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the right front tire and wheel.
  10.  
  11. Install the AIR pump, inner splash shield and lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the lug nuts on the right front to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the serpentine drive belt.
  16.  
  17. Install the negative battery cable.
  18.  

3.1L Engine (VIN T)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable, and remove the serpentine belt.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the flywheel or torque converter cover.
  6.  
  7. Right front tire and wheel assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right front engine splash shield.
  10.  
  11. Use a suitable tool on the flywheel to keep engine from rotating and remove the bolt and washer from the damper.
  12.  
  13. Remove the balancer and the key. With tool J-24420-B or equivalent, turn the puller screw to remove the balancer.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Install the key and balancer.
  2.  
  3. Install the bolt and washer, tighten the bolt to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Attach the engine splash shield.
  6.  
  7. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  8.  
  9. Install the flywheel or torque converter cover.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the right wheel lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the serpentine belt.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  

4.3L Diesel Engine
  1. Remove the serpentine belt.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right splash shield.
  6.  
  7. Unbolt the four pulley-to-crankshaft balancer bolts, then remove the pulley assembly.
  8.  
  9. Unbolt the balancer-to-crankshaft bolt and washer.
  10.  
  11. Remove the balancer assembly by pulling it off. If the balancer is tight on the crankshaft, remove using a puller.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Apply sealer to the inside diameter of the pulley hub and to the crankshaft key to prevent possible oil leakage. Coat the outside area of the pulley hub which enters the seal with lubricant.
  2.  
  3. Attach the balancer on the crankshaft. If it will not slip on with hand pressure, remove the burrs present on the balancer, key or crankshaft, then lightly tap the balancer in place with a rawhide or soft faced hammer.
  4.  
  5. Install the washer and bolt, tighten to 203-350 ft. lbs. (275-474 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the pulley assembly, tighten the four bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Attach the right splash shield.
  10.  
  11. Install the serpentine drive belt.
  12.  
  13. Add engine oil if needed, road test the vehicle and check for leaks.
  14.
