REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTION
The EPA warns that prolonged contact with used engine oil may cause a number of skin disorders, including cancer! You should make every effort to minimize your exposure to used engine oil. Protective gloves should be worn when changing the oil. Wash your hands and any other exposed skin areas as soon as possible after exposure to used engine oil. Soap and water, or waterless hand cleaner should be used.

Fig. Fig. 1: Oil pump assembly used on 2.2L engines

  1. Remove the oil pump-to-main bearing cap bolt, then the oil pump and extension shaft.
  2.

To install:

WARNING
Heat the extension shaft retainer in hot water prior to assembly. Be sure the retainer does not crack upon installation. Wear heavy gloves when handling the hot retainer.

WARNING
To avoid engine damage, all oil pump cavities must be filled with petroleum jelly before installing the gears into the pump body. Also use only original equipment gaskets. Gasket thickness is critical to proper oil pump operation.

  1. Install the extension shaft, oil pump and pump-to-rear main cap bolt. Tighten the oil pump-to-bearing cap bolt to 25-38 ft. lbs. (34-54 Nm) and the upper oil pump drive bolt to 14-22 ft. lbs. (19-30 Nm).
  2.
  3. Install the oil pan and attaching bolts.
  4.
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6.
  7. Fill the crankcase with clean engine oil.
  8.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.
  11. Start the engine, check the oil pressure, then check for leaks.
  12.
  13. Check the oil level, add as needed.
  14.

2.5L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.
  5. Drain the engine oil and remove the oil pan.
  6.
  7. Remove the 2 flange mounting bolts and nut from the main bearing cap bolt.
  8.
  9. Remove the pump and screen as an assembly.
  10.

To install:
  1. Remove the 4 cover attaching screws and cover from the oil pump assembly.
  2.
  3. Pack the space around the oil pump gears completely full of petroleum jelly. There must be no air space left inside the pump. If the pump is not packed, it may not begin to pump oil as soon as the engine is started and engine damage may result.
  4.

WARNING
To avoid engine damage, all oil pump cavities must be filled with petroleum jelly before installing the gears into the pump body. Also use only original equipment gaskets. Gasket thickness is critical to proper oil pump operation.

  1. Align the oil pump shaft to match with the oil pump drive shaft tang, then install the oil pump to the block positioning the flange over the oil pump driveshaft lower bushing. Do not use any gasket. Tighten the bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  2.
  3. Install the oil pan using a new gasket and seals.
  4.
  5. Install the 2 flange mounting bolts and nut to the main bearing cap bolt.
  6.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.
  9. Fill the crankcase with oil.
  10.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.

2.8L Engine

To install:

  1. Assemble the pump and extension shaft with retainer to rear main bearing cap, aligning the top end of the extension shaft with the lower end of the drive gear.
  2.
  3. Install the pump-to-the rear bearing cap bolt. Tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  4.
  5. Install the oil pan.
  6.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.
  9. Fill the crankcase with oil.
  10.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.

3.0L Engines
  1. Remove the oil filter.
  2.
  3. Unbolt the oil pump cover from the timing chain cover.
  4.
  5. Slide out the oil pump gears. Clean all parts thoroughly in solvent and check for wear. Remove the oil pressure relief valve cap, spring and valve.
  6.
  7. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the pressure relief valve cap to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm). Place a straightedge across the face of the pump cover and check that it is flat to within 0.001 in. (0.025mm). Pack the oil pump cavity with petroleum jelly so that there is no air space. Install the cover and tighten the bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm).
  8.
